Legal Question
Hello all,
So I found info on the legal amount of window tint for VA and MD: http://www.tintlaws.com/laws/VA/ ; http://www.tintlaws.com/laws/MD/ ; But I have a weird question... So my car is registered in MD with MD plates. I live in VA and have a VA driver's liscense. Does my car have to abide by only MD laws since it's registered in MD? If so, I do not have to abide by VA laws right? (I'm referring to laws regarding headlights, window tint, modification, etc.) Thanks all.

In case anyone else was wondering about MD laws regarding tint/covers... http://www.mva.maryland.gov/About-MV.../58000-04T.htm (see table at bottom of page).

chances are the cops won't pull you over and question youre tint. i have 20% in IL and they don't do anything, and i don't think they can pull you over for just having a dark tint, its more like a secondary offense, but like i said, if you roll your window down before the cop comes up to the car, he won't have a reason to ask about tint.

So if i am reading this site correctly and they are updated to current va/md specs. The only difference is MD allows 35% for fronts where as VA is 50% and both allow up to 35% for the rear windows.
I'd say you should be fine having 35% on a car with MD plates, but if a VA cop really has it out for you then he could still probably cite you for it. The chances of getting a tint related ticket are always pretty low in my experience. There is also not a huge difference between 35/50 imo, although i do like 35 better ...

Just as a heads up check your windows first! My SVTF had tint on it when I bought it. Was supposed to be "legal 35% tint". But the PO failed to notice that the stock windows had a very light 7% built into the glass, so when I had it checked by an MD state trooper the little box read 28% (35% tint plus the slight tint on the glass only let 28% light through) So I could not get the car registered without yanking all the tinting off.
There's usually a tiny etching somewhere on the window that says the stock glass. If not get it checked by a trooper, cause the Tint shops will just sell the "max legal tint" which may be fine if your glass is perfectly clear, but it's not uncommon for stock windows to have a very slight amount of tint. Of course I kinda doubt you'd get pulled over for it, I mainly had problems because I was trying to get it inspected & registered. Just a heads up if you ever have a cop check it and it comes back as "not legal" even if the tint you were sold was "legal" |

If it becomes an issue, take it to court. You are innocent until proven guilty. Ask to see the proof you were over legal amount

It was all a DREAM!

If you have plates from another state they won't pull you over for tint... My coworker lived in east Chicago which is in Indiana had full tiny back when Illinois didn't allow for front tint, and never had an issue.. I had my front tinted for about a week and got pulled over... Laws changed now where I can tint my front but that's beside the point... You wont get pulled over... Now.. If you do something else, and you get pulled over.. The cop may question why you have a car registered somewhere else... You could say you have multiple residence and one car stays in VA while your main car is in MD... Idk how that would float tho..

Normally law enforcement will not enforce regulations like these on cars from out of state to make legal interstate travel less of a pita.

Yeah me too, but people get away with that all the time. All you have to do is say that you're borrowing the car because your other car broke down. Unless it's registered in your name, then that might cause a problem, but it's a non-issue ticket. All you have to do is register before court, then there's no more problem.
