lol I love how the guy who lives in NC just gave everyone tips on driving in the snow. Quite ironic.

I'm sure when it snows an inch every 2 years, you never have to keep it in lower gears. But if I dont put my car in 1st or 2nd and keep it there when it snows, I will not make it to the end of the street. End of story.

And I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but who the hell DOESN'T use the E-Brake in the snow?!?! It's better than building a snow man. When it's icy or snowy I always yank it up before turning into the driveway. It used to be necessary on my old cars, but now it's just fun.

I usually keep it in Drive unless I'm going up a hill. I try not to use the engine brakes or go into Sport mode while the car is in motion because as another poster said, when you do this sometimes the car will down shift aggressively which might cause your tires to spin and for you to lose control.

Change into Sport mode while you're at a stop light etc. and be light on the accelerator.

I'm not going to say you can't get where you're going by spinning tires up and down the road, but it's not a preferred method of travel. I'll admit that there are times when driving slow and steady will end up getting you stuck, but if that's the case you should probably just park it and wait.

And just because I'm living in NC doesn't mean I've never driven in snow.

Unfortunately, in the business world the "park it and wait" approach is rarely an option. Even with 6 inches of snow on the ground.

Im not saying you've never driven in snow, but I've been in NC when it snows. An inch of snow and all the sudden the world is ending, quite funny actually. Im just saying traveling in lower gears is certainly something that is done here, at least in the part I live. It also depends on the type of snow too though. The wet heavy snow off the lake is the worst. My dads friend from Alaska can't even handle it. Like driving through quick sand sometimes.

Well in PA were used to seeing snow, but people still freak out everytime it comes down. The SUV guys think they can just drive normally and scare the crap out of everyone else and usually end up on the side of the roads.

The hardest part is where I live, it's pretty hilly. So climbing hills can be a challenge at times. In the past, I've used low gear to help with that when going up and down steep hills.

I agree w/ you on the SUV guys..... they think they are in tanks w/ 4WD but all 4WD does is not get u stuck (usually) They still don't brake or corner any better than a 2WD car on sno and ice... They should slow down.

as an aside... ref. the N.C. snows.... i used to live in the piedmont area of n.c. and it never snowed but the mountains often get a lot of snow. just sayin'

When I read this I just had to laugh, reminds me of some clown on another forum who tried to give me advice on road salt and rust and he was from Atlanta.

The SUV's and the Subaru's...they both drive me insane!! Sorry, but your 4wd and AWD aren't going to do shit when you hit a patch ice or your tire gets grabbed by the slush on the edge of the road.

lol on a side note I'm very pleased how these cars are holding up in the salt. My GTI was all speckled and chipped from the salt the abrasives in the salt after its first winter. So far so good with the Focus. Tough paint!

gonna disagree with that last post, my hood looked TERRIBLE after a year of I95 commuting like it was sprinkled with road salt...little white chips everywhere. paint sucks. had a clearbra on the hood and the chips still went all the way up to the A pillar.
