Car won't start

My daughters 2001 zx3 ztec died the other day. She got to school ok then after school tried to start it and it would just click. We have checked the battery it is good, we have cleaned all the posts and clamps to the battery, the starter seems to be not stuck. Could it be possible that the timing belt may have broken? Would this keep the motor from starting? The belts would usually break while driving though isn't that right? We are at a loss here. Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

No a broke timing belt wouldnt keep it from tuning over , does the engine turn free with a breaker bar turning it by hand ?

How was the battery tested? I had an issues a few years back. I thought it was the starter because even putting a charger or jumper cables it still not turn over. Got the starter tested, test said it was good but since they can't test a load I replaced it any way. Still did not work. Got the battery tested and it was OK but not great. I pulled a battery from one of my other vehicles and it started right up. So got a new battery and did not have any problems since.

Here is a pic of one of the wheels were the serpentine belt runs through. The hosing appears to be cracked. Could this be my problem?

Hey have you check fuses and relays at all. Check to see if fuel pump, kicks on at all when you go to start. Have you looked at any of the terminals for ground wires. Also I know with my 05srt it had kill switches that if they broke car would not start ex. Cam position sensor crank position sensor dome light, ect. Are there any codes you can read?

Yeah, that thing in your pic is the serpentine belt tensioner you need to get that fixed like now. Also my first focus was doing the same thing I replaced the battery drove a few day then the same thing happened. It turned out to be the alternator. I would pull it and have it tested.

Would that tensioner keep the engine from turning over?

Have you tried jumpstarting it? If it starts, it's the battery.

No it should not keep the engine from turning over.

Lets get back to the beginning just to clarify some things here.

Does the engine actually turn over? Like when you turn the key and try to start it, you can hear the sound of it trying to start? It just won't fire up?

If it is actually turning over, then its time to check the basics. Take the oil fill cap off so you can peer in and see one of the camshafts down through the hole. Have someone crank the engine over and see if the cam is spinning. If it does, you know the timing belt is intact. If it doesn't, the timing belt has snapped.

If this is met, then its time to start checking for the basics needed for the engine to run. Spark, fuel, air, and compression.
