To Dyno or not?
Hey guys, as you know dyno tuning isnt cheap. Im just curious if getting my zetec dyno tuned would be worth the money. I have AEM Ram air intake, FSWerks race headers into race exhaust, and fswerks 91 octane tune, although here in florida i use 93(got the tune when i was in San Diego). I still have to replace the timing belt and im at 115k. I would like to do cams, but i just simply know nothing about them, and eventually a supercharger if i could find a decent one for under a few grand. Im confident when i get a big boy job and have the money im keeping my zx3 as a project car for auto-x and track days.
Just wondering what you guys think. |

Get a tune from Tom (1TurboFocus with Focus-Power). He can tune and real time monitor. Get the F.I. tune and you will be set for life basically. Any mod you add he will connect back up with you and re tune. Do that and then just go to a dyno to do a few runs to know what your power is.

what do i need for that? when i got the fswerks tune i paid 400 for the sct tuner... could have been less i cant remember.. i wouldnt be going FI for a little while. I have 3 years of college left lol, unless i have extra money left from my financial aid.

Well since you have the tuner it will be a little cheaper. But I think its about $500 for Toms F.I. tune. The thing is he actually gives you a base line like FSworks but then you send him logged data and he then sends you a new tune and you repeat until your both satisfied. And any time you add something and "need" or want a new tune you re data log and get a new tune. Its not cheap though...but well worth it. I got the FSworks tune 5 years ago and wish I had gone with Tom back then.
But I will be getting his tine before I am done with my motor build.

While you are doing the timing belt, slap some adjustable cam gears on it and do the dyno tune to adjust them correctly.
I highly suggest Tom's tune as well. But, he cannot adjust the cams gears remotely. But, you could always road trip up his way.............

^^ Getting adjustable cam gears would optomize your dyno tune. Just knowing what my engine is actually doing would be worth it for me

True. While a Tom can't adjust the gears, you can. I am not sure of the data available to Tom and if it is enough to maximize your cam timing but he should from experience know the sweet spots. Not sure if you could use your but dyno to do the course adjustments. Then the data logs to fine tune adjust.
