Mazda CX-5

I tried to talk my sister into buying a new style Escape, but she ended up getting a CX-5 instead. She has a history with Mazda and couldn't break the cycle. She bought a 1993 626 new, traded it on a 2004 mazda 6 new. Both cars rusted out and burnt a ton of oil at low mileages. Blue smoke and rusted quarter panels. Lots of brake and suspension issues.

The new CX-5 is really quite terrible. The dash is like it is out of two different vehicles. The lighting on the bottom half is Mazda orange, while the cluster and infotainment stuff is lit blue/gray. The bluetooth phone system is clunky and not nearly as smooth as sync. It has factory remote start and push button start, but you need a huge remote for the starter which doesn't open the doors. Attached to this remote is a second Mazda remote to unlock the doors. You need all this out in your hand to get in, but once in it must be tossed somewhere since there is of course no need to put it in the ignition. After getting out, use it again to lock up. Fords intelligent access beats this hands down. Key in pocket or purse the whole time.

The truck has less power than a new Focus but is much heavier, so very slow. Can't speak of mileage since the sister doesn't really care about figuring it out. "Seems fine." she says. The ride is so loud and the rear end knocks badly like a bad shock, except the demo and the one they bought do the same thing.

I think a huge part of the population doesn't care or couldn't tell a good car from a badly designed one if their life depended on it. Brand loyalty overpowers thinking too much. Honda put out that shitty 2012 Civic to lousy reviews and sales numbers didn't change.

The Escape looks and feels much better. Not perfect and a few "fire issues" but overall a nicer CUV. My sister in law, however did take my advice and got a 2.0 Ecoboost Escape SE with lots of options and loves it.

I haven't really heard much negative press about the CX-5, other than it being underpowered. The diesel should fix that when we get it. Actually, Car and Driver picked the CX-5 as the winner of a 6 little-ute comparo: clicky link here.

That said, I have to agree with OP about most buyers having no clue what makes a good or bad car. It's often tiny insignificant things such as button placement or color options that outweigh a well designed engine or chassis, or the consumer just blindly buys the newest model of the car they currently drive. That's how the Civic and Corolla continue to sell so well.

The 2013 Escape weighs more than both of those too at 3500lbs +

The new escape and CX5 both look nice to me...not in the market for either so makes no difference to me either way

I'm trying to convince my sister to get a Focus or a Fiesta, but she doesn't find them appealing. Some people like different things, and the things you don't like about it, she could probably care less about.

To some people, cars are cars. Slow or fast, they're usually grocery getters.

Trying to talk in-laws in to and Edge. Mother in-law ufortunately totaled hers when a woman from her same nieghboorhood "didn't" see the stop sign that has been before either house was even built. oh, well. anyway, she is ok, but sore.
So they seem to be going between the Edge and Equinox, like she had. They are not too big on techno stuff. Still flip-phone people. They have figured out Blue-tooth for hands free driving, but touch screens are like Star-Treck.

They are looking and driving both today. They sat in the Escape and said too small, and not liking the looks. They really like the look of the edge, just hard to break that X-Brand loyalty. But, it is their money....

Various road test put the 0-60 times of the CX-5 at 9 to 9.5 seconds. My 5 speed Focus is reported to do it in 7.3 seconds. I have driven the CX-5 and although seat of the pants road tests are hardly accurate, those numbers kind of feel about right.

I looked up a couple of weights for the CX-5 and they range from 3300 to 3500 depending on equipment. Mazda itself cites a 1555kg weight which is 3421 lbs for the awd. Most weight listings for the Focus are 2900 lbs up to 3100 for the Titanium.While the Escape may be a bit of a porker, it does have more power in either the 1.6 or 2 liter engines.

Different vehicles will test differently but slow is slow and up to 400 pounds is a fair bit of extra weight.
