Wow, did you have any mods or anything to achieve that kind of mpg?

Nearly all-highway, cruise at 65 MPH, A/C on, for mostly flat roads. That said, we drove through the Adirondacks on part of the tank and I was having more than a little fun with the DCT in the twisties! I was running 93 octane. I've come to the conclusion that Premium does help MPGs... but only with tanks of 85%+ highway driving, in the summer.

Myself and some others have agreed that premium only helps when a) you're driving nearly all-highway, b) it's warm out (summer gas), and c) you drive a relatively steady speed. Mix in any city / stop and go and it quickly becomes pointless. But my two best MPG tanks (45 and 42) were all-highway on 93 octane in the summer, FWIW.

Since we all get really good mpg numbers on the way, maybe we should start testing on which Octane would be really good for driving in the city with little to no highway use?

I once got 509 miles on a single tank with a fill up of 12.53 gallons (topped off by 0.4 gallon) making the mpg 40.6.
In September, while spending nearly a week in Yellowstone and being limited by the park speed limit of 45mph, I averaged over 44mpg for over 1300 miles. The Mk3 gets great mileage at modest speed and very good mileage when you can cruise without stops, but stop-and-go really, REALLY kills mileage. Under the right conditions I am confident I could get a 600 mile tank, but you would have to cruise the whole tank at 40mph and have very few stops... Brian

I can all but guarantee it's 87. Stop and go kills MPGs in this car, so the cheapest $/gal should always win out.
