How does the downhill assist button help with fuel economy. Seems like it just downshifts and I would think higher rpm = higher fuel use
What downhill assist? What are you talking about? And how slow did you have to go to get the 500 mile tank, 53? You get run off the road around here going that damn slow, or at least flipped off about 30-40 times.

When I try to grandma drive Prius owners flip me off when they pass.
It's on the gear shifter it's supposedly helps you not have to brake going downhill. It just downshifts from what I can tell.
I have been a lazy sob on that video account

No, not grandma...

I drove on a mix of roads from interstate with speeds of 65mph or more and national park roads where speeds were often below 30mph due to traffic.

I have the advantage of living in and driving in an area with low population density and I can go many miles without having to stop even when driving the back roads. I frequently drive in such places so my lifetime average, closing in on 39mpg, is probably 2-3 mpg higher than it might be in a more densely populated place and maybe 6-9 mpg higher than those that live and drive in urban traffic situations.

On the tank I got 540 miles my average speed was probably about 55mph due to some places, like mountain passes, where the speed was as little as 30mph.

The thing is ... I was on vacation and didn't have to hoof it to get someplace...

It ruins me, I know I can get that mileage but I have a 130 mile round trip all interstate so I gotta warp speed it :D plus all these hills kills it on the up side but coasting down regains a bit

I have a 70 mile daily commute, and with the idiots on the roads around here who can't drive to save their lives, good fuel mileage is tough to do. Luckily today, with it being a holiday for some, the road had no idiots on it and I managed to make it to work, cruising 65 mph and averaged 35mpg. Which is good because my low fuel light was on and I wanted to see if I could make it to work, 35 miles, when it showed 40 miles to empty.

Hills are not necessarily a killer for mileage. If you go down as much as you go up things tend to even out so long as you're not riding the brakes or making heavy use of engine braking. If you can coast down the downhill side without wasting energy in the brakes the difference between flat ground and hills is pretty minimal.

I should have mentioned that the tank I just got 540 miles on was benefited by a change in elevation from start to finish. The elevation at the start was 6732 feet (Steamboat Springs CO) and at the end in SLC it's more like 4226 feet so I lost 2506 feet over the tank and that probably added more than 1-2 mpg by it self.

54 miles each way commute - Bristol, VA to Erwin, TN. 110 miles/day. All interstate, I81-S, I26-E. My mileage has improved in the last year from <33 to 34+ all around. The part of I26 through Johnson City, TN is awful. Feels like driving the Baltimore Beltway. I've run over boxsprings, mattresses, car parts, deer (dead and alive) and then there's the 15 mile trip to Erwin.

Going over 70 earns me "bad" points on the eco-scale (the little pot leaf) but I gotta get to work, so...

Bought 2012 FoFo SE hatch on May 9, 2012.

My little pot lea is always full green in expected but then in actual it's greyed out. Not sure if that's a part of the sync unit and not flashed to work in my base trim.

I got 492 miles averaging probably 60-65 mph on interstate/state highway last summer...

First entry!

401 miles, 11.562 gallons, 34.6mpg.

Got gas just west of Indy coming back from FF13, but 120 miles or so was running around after I got home.
