Custom enclosure?
Hello everyone. I am thinking about upgrading the stock system in my 13 SE. Replacing the factory front components with some aftermarkets and adding a small sub to the back. My question is has anyone done a custom eclosure for the hatch area? I want to take up as little room as possible as I am always hauling my road bike around. Not interested in removing the space tire either. Any thoughs would be appreciated. Or any suggestions on a very shallow mounted sub that would take up as least space as possible. Thanks!!

I know I'll probably get laughed at for this, but I had a 10-inch Bazooka in my previous car, and I really enjoyed it. I picked it because it was cheap, and it would come right out again when I wanted it to by just unbuckling it. It was also small. I had it mounted horizontally against the rear seats. It wouldn't stand up to more high-end equipment, but then it was way cheaper and simpler. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone looking for a more satisfying level of bass to compliment OEM speakers at a reasonable price.
As a fellow Canadian, I'd say look out for Future Shop slashing the prices on them. The 10 retails at $240 usually, but they go on sale frequently. Just a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that they were cut to like half price. An all-in-one 100-watt 10 for $120 is a pretty good value in my eyes. It's not for everyone, and a lot of people have a really negative knee-jerk reaction towards them, but I was satisfied with it, and I have pretty high standards for performance/value in my audio equipment. Honestly, though, the next time I put a sub in my car, I'm going to spring for something bigger and better, since I'll be driving a much nicer car that I'll be keeping for longer (that being my Focus). Also, I enjoy trying different configurations and brands. So that's my input, and please don't laugh at me! |

As another fellow (abroad) Canadian. I would recommend staying away from future shop/bestbuy when buying car audio equipment. I find the mark up at future shop and best buy to be huuuuuge.
Best to buy your stuff online. Just do your research and you should be golden. I saved a good 30-50% getting the same products online as opposed to best buy. |

The best and most rewarding enclosure you can have in your hatch would be to build a fiberglass enclosure in either(or both) wells on the corners of your trunk. It literally is the most efficient use of space and acoustically it rocks....
You could carpet it or if you are really inclined you could smooth out the finish enough to paint it. This would be the perfect "custom" sub enclosure. Since it would be a sealed enclosure even less space is needed, the only downside is if you wanted a ported enclosure imo that would be impossible with this kind of set-up. and heck you can mount the amp to the top of the trunk so as to not get in the way for your bike

Haha, no doubt. But sometimes stuff is crazy on sale, like 50% off. I'd never buy anything at regular price. Their mobile audio selection is pretty poor as well.

I have 2 JL audio 12 w6's in custom solobaric fiberglass boxes in my hatch, and they defintily do the business quite well. I drown out 15s well and not much is louder, although all my audio is redone, including the metra faceplate and aftermarkey deck.

I'm thinking of 1 JL 13TW5 and raising the floor 3 inches and keeping the spare. But I am willing to see more ideas. |
