What I would like to see is some retro modern cars come out. And not cheesy ones like the Pt Cruiser and HHR. Some retro American cars, A retro 60's styled Volvo would be sweet... or VW... Volvo kind of did a retro of the 1800es w/ the C30.

Volvo V50. The V40 is an updated version of this styling. Not based upon the MK3 Focus at this point since Ford and Volvo have been separated from a design perspective for a few years now.

But people aren't designing in a vacuum so some of the designs come out similar.

To me the new V40 looks like the V50 with the C30's rear end.

There isn't that much you can do to differentiate the same basic shapes without it making minor differences.

However they both are evolutions of the older cars not carbon copies of the new ones.

In engineering terms the Top hats are not identical, and probably were not even remotely designed by the same people, even if they roughly look similar due to both being three box designs. However in detail they don't look that much alike to me. I own the MK3, but I'd have liked to see the estate available here, but they said there was no market for it.

They wanted to sell the escape instead.

The core of the unibody looks very closely related as they are using many of the same exact parts and are based on the exact same unibody architecture. There are only so many ways to skin this cat around the same hard points.

So yes they look similar, but they weren't designed at the same time by the same people to be identical.

These are all derrived from the same platform, in fact so is the Escape, therefore they all look very similar due to the constraints of the same platform.

I have the hatch, but I would have liked to see the estate here.

The auto industry hasn't had an original idea in decades. It seems that there is only one styling studio.

That is the last thing I am going to say on the subject.
