Ok for those that were not listening:

The ball joint pinch bolt is a shouldered bolt. The "shoulder" is a larger diameter than the threaded portion.

It is the shoulder that secures the ball joint from dropping out of the knuckle by fitting snugly in the groove on the ball joint.

An impropper bolt can allow the ball joint to drop out, and is DANGEROUS!

^^^I was just about to say the same thing!


I remember seeing this thread a long time ago, so when I needed ball joints I got them from B.A.T and they even had the too small bolt. So it's not limited to Autozone ball joint kits, and don't put hardware store bolts in there either.

I just checked on what Moog sent me and it was the correct oem style bolt. I changed the lower control arm with the ball joint already in it as one piece rather than drilling rivets.

I didn't use the bolt that came with my ball joint. It looked weaker then OEM.

You're the second person I've heard say the Moog brand comes with the correct bolt. So Moog's on top of it.

I've been thinking about getting new control arms. Do the Moog ball joints come with grease fittings or are they sealed?

The moog ball joints by themselves come with greaseable fittings. You can still grease the non-greaseable ones with a needle adaptor n your grease gun
