To be honest KBB is not really a useful metric when talking about a dealer trade in value, they tend to use black book values and recent auction numbers in the local market, especially the retail price listed by KBB. You might be able to get the private sale value if and only if your car was clean enough and if you were willing to wait for a buyer to have the money, then take the risk that its either counterfeit, or that the check bounces after you've already handed over the keys if you don't hold onto the funding until it clears completely,etc...

When talking about selling to a private party, I agree.

Yeah, my car was $26,450 (there were no rebates at the time) and KBB (very good) dealer buy-back is $16,129. I'm sure the 40k miles and trim level are what's killing it, but damn - 40% depreciation in the first year is a real hit.

I never planned on selling it, but it's not comforting knowing that I never can.

You early purchasers really got screwed prior to the big discounts.

New Years Weekend special is $5,500 off every 2013 Titanium Focus at my nearest dealer.

Ford is really trying to blow out sales this final weekend of 2012.

Sell the winter wheels privately, take the hit on the trade.

You won't get 20k. I was lucky to even get 12k for my SE, which was slightly under blue book.

These cars are selling for shekels at the auctions, and there's thousands of them out there. Ford flooded the fleet market and threw too much money on the hood. Welcome to the world of market induced depreciation.

As others have said, you probably won't get KBB's trade-in value unless you sell it privately.

I traded my loaded 2012 SEL with just under 9000 miles on it. KBB was $15.8K, and after many "back-n-forths" with the salesman, they gave me $15.2K.

Good luck with your trade.

That's not the value that I see...trade-in values are $16.5k using kbb and like $15.5k on black book. My Ti was fully-loaded except heated seats at around $28k brand new.

That's pretty close to a 50% drop in a year. Private sale is completely different from trade-in value.

hell-a miles on your car

no discounts like now when you bought it either....Fords own incentives on brand new kill your resale value. Anything luxury (or loaded to that spec) drops value HARD.

My SEL sedan, with sync&mft, dct, rear back up sensors, 17 inch wheels, leather seats, sony sound system, had a sticker price of 24.3k. It now has 9,500 miles on it, and KBB value is $14,398 for excellent condition for TRADE IN. For private sale it is $16,433 in EXCELLENT condition. Realistically I think my car is in "very good" condition which drops the price to $15,933 for private sale, and $14,148 for trade in.

I bought my car on the last day of January of 2012...it lost 8-10k in value in LESS than a year.

I ended up getting $16k for the car. Traded it in today for a 2013 Accord Sport. Vastly superior car for $3k less than I paid for the Focus (sticker to sticker). The interior feels *solid* and well-made, there are no rattles at all, the infotainment system actually works without issues, and the 6-speed manual is one of the best transmissions I've ever driven...including most race-ready cars. I used to be in the racing world and have driven hundreds of different manual cars...the clutch and transmission in this thing are fantastic and match any of the best cars I've had out.

Either way, it was really great being on this board. I'll still be filing complaints with various agencies about the lack of customer support I received from Ford, but I'm glad to finally be in another stable. Plus, this car looks *good*:

Except you're not comparing apples to apples, that is like comparing a Civic SI to a Fusion SE.

And for a real comparison the Fusion SE with 1.6L with the Sport appearance pkg (which is in essence what Honda is 'attempting' to duplicate) is $25,745 with current incentives can be had for $23,207.

and to the guy above, did you actually pay $24,300 or did you nickel and dime the dealer and get the $2,000 rebate and pay closer to $20,000?
