Confused about Cruise Control

I bought my '01 Focus in June and the CC worked wonderfully. Sometime within the first two months it stopped working--press the button at speed and nothing happens. Now that I have a little time and money, I've decided to poke around and see what's wrong, but I can't figure this out. I have done the following:
1) Checked fuses 53 inside and 29 under the hood. Both were fine.
2) Done the little Ford Cruise Control test code. I turned the key to 'on' (but didn't turn the engine over) while hitting 'off' on the CC: One green light flashed. Hit 'on': One green light flashed. All of the buttons in the correct order (top bottom middle): One green light flashed for all of them. According to this test, it should work. Also, the third brake light works so it's not that (I've read that brake lights going out can screw with the CC).
What else can I try? I read someone's account (may have been here, even) of someone doing the diagnostic code and suddenly it all worked again but I haven't tried it since doing the diagnostic because I'm not sure I actually did anything; I'm also waiting for the engine to cool so I can pop out the spark plugs (god, I'm getting terrible fuel mileage).
