You will not see 20 - 30 HP gain from a ported head , not even half that , 1/4th if you lucky and I am not talking about surfacing the head to raise the compression as that is the biggest power gain you can get on any NA engine

I have done a few Zetec NA engine with stock heads in the mid 150 range , you dont need a ported head to get into the mid 150 HP to the wheels

Ported head does very little in NA form or boosted form on the Zetec engine , If you want to spend about 3500 - $4000.00 on the Zetec head you can make it make good power but you wont get 3500 worth of power

Whoa, where are you pulling these prices from, thats on the way high end of the scale? Also what are these people doing who can pull 160-170 whp from zetec then? I find it funny how information on our motors can change over the years. Back in the day if you wanted n/a power it was head and cams plus all the right bolts ons. Funny how that changes..

Not saying i agree or disagree with the head porting thing, because honestly, i have no experience with theses heads, so i really have no clue at the moment, BUT... IF any porting were to be done to the head, it would be done by me... meaning it would cost a big whopping zero dollars. So, i really dont think it could hurt.

On a side note... I also look into different options when porting, like making a custom manifold, and raising the floor and ceiling of the port for a more direct shot into the cylinder. But as i said before, i haven't even seen what the ports look like yet, so this may be impossible.

Also.... how much can you safely deck the head to raise the compression? and would it be safe for 91 octane? with a tune of course.

I have a bridgeport milling machine at home with a nice fly cutter that i have decked many a head with.

HERE is the sticky threads in the zetec performance area you can look over for ideas and what not. HERE is another thread on how to find out your compression ratio. I hope that helps

How much you can deck the stock head is going to depend on cam choice.
Stock cam you can take quite a bit and be rather safe on 91/93.
Any aftermarket cam and you should deck less just to be safe.
If it does happen you get knock you can swap to the SVT head gasket being it's thicker.
The ZX2 guys (John P) has safely taken 0.090" off a head. IIRC I'd measured the extreme end to be 0.120", deck to highest point of the valve seat.

For porting,
The intake side becomes restricted by cam choice and valve diameter. Look into what a Ford Racing head looks like, try to mimic it.
On the exhaust side, it's very restrictive. You can open them up quite a bit and gain a fair amount of usable power. The key here is surface finish (no matter what anyone else says). The smoother you can get the entire port the better, reduce surface area, increase flow and decrease heat loss which keeps velocity up.

Stock cams/valves, you'll start to choke around 6,500rpm. Porting won't change this much.
Big valves, cams and porting and you can extend the RPM range a fair amount. 7,000+ isn't to hard to do. And then you'll start to see the kind of HP #'s you're thinking you'll get.

The head being used in this thread is a well ported Zetec head.

See, now that just makes me want to get going on my mk4 sprite conversion. Still have yet to settle on a drivetrain choice. As of right now it's going to get a dodge turbo 2.5. Mainly because I already have the 5spd and tons of parts.
