Calling the Focus Guru's
So the other day I notice both my front coil springs are broke into. I know there was a campaign through Ford for 10 years or 150k miles or something on the coil springs rusting through. Well I am over by miles and years in my 2001 Ford Focus SE. So today I happened to be a salvage yard with a buddy of mine. I found a pair of struts/coil spring assembly on a focus that say QUICK STRUT on them. Well through a little research it says these are Monroe struts/springs that sell for $127 a piece. Did these strut spring combo ever come factory on a focus? or are they definitely aftermarket? This vehicle had no front end damage and these coil spring/strut assemblies appeared in good shape. The salvage yard wants $20 a piece so $40 for both. Car didnt have alot of miles and if these are not factory then they cant be that old. Seems like a good deal. Thoughts?
Thanks in advance. |

Those wouldn't have been installed by any dealer that I'm aware of. They would use OEM Ford products, and if it was under recall, it would be under a new part number.

Monroe shocks and struts, in my opinion, arent bad at all. Thats what I use on my focus, and I dont have any complaints about them. And for that price, if they look to be in good shape, I would grab them.

monroes are basically OEM aftermarket parts. OEM quality and everything, just not from ford so they don't charge you 500 for the set.

Aftermarket and over the counter but not sold by Ford. The quick replacement for people who cannot take apart assemblies. I used to sell them. As good as anything else. Mechs love them because faster strut job and more profit there.
I'd jump on them. |

If you haven't installed them yet, here's a heads-up: installing the QuickStruts is a cinch, but removing the old ones might be a PITA. Alot of us with older Focii have had trouble coaxing the strut tower out of the steering knuckle, due to corrosion and the fact that the knuckle might not want to drop far enough to release the strut from its jaw. Try to finesse it, and resist the urge to stomp on that motherf#!*r, as your $40 strut job could turn into a couple hundred dollar axle/joint job.
If your endlinks are old, now is a good time to replace those, too, as well as the rear shocks (QuickStrut uses a SensaTrac damper, so it makes sense to stick with a SensaTrac rear shock). My final caution is: the steering knuckle may seem like a bulletproof block of pig iron, but - as my local Ford dealer proved - the pinch bolt threads in the knuckle can be stripped. As is always good practice, finger-thread them at first. BTW - you snagged a great deal, pat yourself on the back for it! Last year, I paid about $250 for a new pair of QuickStruts - and that was with discounts and rebates.
