Rear Defroster

Hey 2012 owners,

Has anyone else noticed their 2012 ford focus rear defroster turns on by it self when ever you first start the car without the light turning on?

I am going into my first winter with this car and every time I had frost on the rear window I've noticed that it will defrost it self as if the defroster was turned on when I never did turn it on.

I already called my dealer and they say that its not normal and to keep an eye on it. They are more than willing to check it to be sure but I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this with theirs?

Mind you I only have the base model with no remote start.

My 2012 SEL does not do that. I have to press the button for it to go on.

If you use remote start and the temperature is cold enough it will come on until you get in the car and hit the start button. Side mirrors defrost too. I love it!

Thanks for the link to the original thread and answering this question.

I was just worried about it as during the summer if it turned on automatically like it is now then that could cause a problem.

Nope, when I turn the defrost to max I have definitely seen the defroster turn on, although sometimes it turns the light on under that condition, otherwise on defrost it still seems to turn on with the light off.

I have an SE with the basic HVAC controls and mine comes on. It doesn't bother me. I still hit the button anyway out of habit. My guess is it only happens under a certain external temperature or engine temp. I seem to remember once last year not hitting the button purposely and down the road a while I ended up having to hit the button because it was fogging back up. My light doesn't come on unless I turn on the RD.
