Big time tranny issues!!

Hey guys I'm in a bit of a spot. Could really use some help. Was drivin down the road and I lost all my top gears (1st, 3rd, 5th) but had my bottom half (2nd, 4th, R) then was trying to get it home and lost all gears I still had. And now my gear shift moves freely in a circle. Is it linkage or is is the tranny bad? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Well your first step should be checking the linkage. If the linkage checks out then you can dig deeper.

Check linkage. The cable that connects to the gearbox, check gearbox side.

Linkage was not the issue. Checked it all and it was fine. The part that the linkage hooked onto right above the tranny itself was totally free floating. Replaced the tranny and all is well. Back on the road and works like a dream. Grand total for project was about $325. Thanks for the pointers guys. Wished like heck that it was the linkage. Lol. Oh well though had a good time doin this swap overall.

Actually this happened to me on my way to work except I lost all gears but 2nd by the time I pulled into the parking 30miles away from where I live. When I went to lunch and started driving in 2nd gear that's when I noticed I had no third. Ended up getting it to a shop and it was the shifter rod that controls the shifter forks had broke. It was cheaper to get another transmission in the car versus replacing that single part because the shop will just say if the transmission is out they will just rebuild it so that way nothing else could go wrong and it will be under warranty but it will be more expensive going that route. My replacement transmission cost me $300 with 21k on it and I got it installed for a total price of $939 with a one year unlimited mileage warranty. Total price included a new slave cyclinder a few other parts.
