Misfire when accelerating. Help!

I drive a 2000 kona zx3, and I am getting a misfire now when i am accelerating. A similar thing happened about 6 months ago, but it was a shorting plug wire, and as soon as i replaced the wires, the problem was solved. i Checked the wires, and they all seem good. I also checked the plugs, and they look good too.

The Weird thing about it this time, is that when it misfires, it causes the speedometer to spike up about 20 mph, and sometimes like 50+. It immediately returns to the current speed, but i figured that might be some clue to what is wrong.


The car has 160k+ on it now, and i believe the coil is the factory unit. Should i suspect that?

Moved your thread to the Technical Chat area so you can get some better help. The Performance chat area is for talking about performance parts. Check the coil pack plug the wires are known for getting pulled out. Also check your coil pack for cracks.

The common advice on checking the coil is to remove it & look at the base for cracking, if found it needs replacement.

And be gentle with it's connector, and check that as well since loose connections or broken wires there are not uncommon. Replacement "pigtails" are avail. from Ford if there is a problem there so you don't need a whole new harness section!

Fixed the problem. Lengthened the connector wires so they are not being pulled anymore, and replaced the coil. Problem fixed!

Yes, yes it does. It really helps others who have the same problem. There are countless threads with problems and the OP never says if they fix them or not. Thanks for the update and glad to hear you got it fixed

I am really starting to like this community. Much more responsive than most of the other forums I am on.

Now it's time to change the rings, bearings, clutch, timing belt and head gasket, among a few other gaskets and seals. Go big or go home! You'll probably be seeing a lot more of me and my projects in the near future.
