Rot above the frame rail on 03 Wagon

I found a 2003 with 60,000 miles and this Focus is loaded with every option offered by Ford in 2003. The mechanic said they will not safety the Wagon due to rot above the frame rail on the drivers side. Anyone here with rust repair experience that may chime in. I would love to buy it vs scraping such a nice car.

Just my 2c, but in my experience rust is like an iceberg. What you see initially is generally about 20% of what really exists. By the time you get to the point where a shop won't inspect it, nothing good can come of it but headaches for you. Personally, I'd avoid it. It never seems like it at the time, but there is always another car. I'll take higher miles less rust over lower miles more rust any day. Mechanical things are fixed a lot easier than rusty metal.

I've never seen a Focus split in two and I've seen some pretty bad ones.

My advice though is look else where. Unless this car is really cheap and your only planning on running it for a year or two, a car like this will continue to rot till something does break. If the body is in that bad a shape, I can only imagine how bad the sub frames are.

And for the record, I'm talking from experience here. It's a massive amount of work to try and save a rusted car, and even then, the most you can really do is hide the problem.

we had several Maxima's around here split in two during serious highway crashes
Liked the look of the Maxima but after seeing those types of pics , would never own one
I would probably be afraid to even ride in one

Look underneath, almost every passenger car on the planet can split in two if hit right. Most do not completely frame all the way front to back, the frames run at front, quit and then take up at back again and basic unibody construction. Why drag cars put in 'frame connectors' to stiffen chassis up, the middle of car simply in the bedpan and roof only with not much else. Strike a telephone pole in middle of car broadside and in a high speed sideways slide and give it up, seen all kinds split in two. Full frame vehicles are much harder to do that with.

Focus built exactly that way.................
