2001 SE Fuel pump replacement

Good afternoon. I came here hoping to solve my fuel pump foes. The fuel pump is bad, no question about that. My problems are related to replacement. I bought a BOSCH 67250 fuel pump. According to NAPA, Advance Auto, Autozone, and the Bosch website, THIS is the fuel pump for my car. 2001 SE DOHC. I trailered the car to my mechanic yesterday morning and gave him the new fuel pump to put in. He called me later in the day and said that I had the wrong part. I went down there and the old pump was different than the new pump. The old pump had a screen on the bottom and was slightly smaller. It also twist-locked into a bracket on the bottom of the tank. The new pump has a strainer screen on the side and rubber feet that it sits on. It will not lock into the bracket.

I came home and have been searching since last night for the "correct" part. Every place I go says that the pump I bought IS the OEM pump. I started looking to see if Ford upgraded the fuel pumps at all. I found some references saying that you have to remove the tabs, or the entire bracket, from the bottom of the fuel tank, but nothing conclusive.

Can anyone out there in Focus-land point me into the right direction? I want to give my mechanic something to work with. I don't think I have the wrong part. I think its an upgrade. Please help.

Thanks!

If your old pump was the original factory part, then it might have been one of the defective pumps that was recalled & redesigned.

I posted a pic a couple of months ago that my dealer sent me when he swapped out my old recalled pump for the new design. He's no Ansel Adams, but there might be enough detail there to help you & your mechanic sort it out. It's at the top of page 2 of this thread:

The old pump in those pics is just what mine looks like. The new pump is close. Mine is missing the springs and guide rods, but I can get one of those pumps. Otherwise how would the bottom section stay upright in the tank.

Do you just break the tabs of the bottom of the tank? Can anyone point me to something official? I know my mechanic and he won't accept here-say. He's a great guy, I've known him for years, and I trust him, which is why I go to him with problems that I can't solve.

THANKS!
