my buddy checked out the ST and he didn't like the seats either. he came home with a black infinity G37 instead.

I went to the LA auto show today to play with the new ST's. I'm a big guy, 6'3" and 260lbs, the seats in the Focus ST HURT. They definitely aren't for fat people. I was frantically searching for some kind of lumbar adjustment but I found nothing to relieve the pain. This really saddens me, but the regular Models are still cozy so the experience justifies me settling for a more basic model. The Fiesta ST's weren't open so I couldn't see if it was just as bad as the focus ST. Granted I'm a big dude shopping for little fords, I still wish the seats were wider. Even my SVO recaro seats were super cozy, and that was engineered in 1984.

I think there's no adjustable lumbar in the ST seats. Pre-production models had 8-way Recaros with lumbar and extensible thigh support, but the production car has 6-way seats. Had to cut something to meet a price target, I guess.

Of the dislikes I've seen, most seem to involve the width of the side bolsters, rather than the seats.

I'm even shorter and heavier, and certainly wouldn't describe the seats as "painful". The seat's deeper than I was used to. But I don't find it uncomfortable -- just unusual on first acquaintance. Seemed pretty normal after a few drives, and I like not sliding around the way you do on a flat, wide, seat. Jury's still out on long endurance drives, where the lumbar support might become more important.
