Question 2003 Ford Focus SE - Wiring Harness

Hello,
I'm a new member, so I'm not sure I'm posting in the right area and not yet familiar with navigating this website.
To the point, I bought a focus used, have only had it for a few weeks now. I have a Sony CDX-GT25MPW from the car I used to drive that I want to move to the focus. I have removed the Blaupunkt stereo, purchased a wiring harness and found that it for some reason does not fit the "stock" harness, and have done the unthinkable and cut the stock harness to wire it myself. I have an understanding of wiring schematics, and followed the schematics from the haynes manual. The stereo works, but ONLY if the headlights are switched on. What could be happening here? Pictures of harnesses to follow.

("stock" meaning I bought the car used, who knows if it's the original harness or not, it fits the Blaupunkt, and there was no previous cuts to the wires as far back into the car as I could see.)

My guess would be you have the illumination wire hooked up wrong. If you turn the lights on that would activate the illumination wire making the stereo go dim. But in this case it turns it on. There are also 2 or 3 different stereo connectors for the focus depending on what model stereo you had in my car. I had to buy 2 different ones cause the first one i bought wasn't correct it was for the blaupunkt stereo and i need one that wasn't for that.

That was my fear..
I have the yellow wire from the CD Player to the Orange/black wire in the car (thick wire) was specified in the schematics. The red wire is connected to yellow/green in the car, which is a thin wire. I'm thinking that may be the problem but I did not see any other yellow/green wires. When the headlights are on it works great, except for the slight hum when there is no music.

This is the wiring scheme I followed:
