Cruise Control Issue

I noticed today while coming down the interstate that the dern Resume feature of the speed control would not work. Also, part of the time, I had to turn the speed control power off and back on to get the speed to set after attempting to hit Resume a few time. I first saw this Resume problem Wednesday but thought it was just because it had been a while since using the speed control. I can hear the click of the button for Resume, but nothing happens. Dang it, 527 miles and 4 days old!

Are you sure that the cruise control was actually on at the time (i.e. the multi-function display in the instrument cluster was still showing the desired speed with a line through it)?

That is also the cancel button and it might perform differently if pressed in different locations, although I can't exactly remember as I haven't used my cruise control lately. Did you try hitting set + or set - to see if it took your current speed?

I would hope this wasn't a real problem, but if it is that it would be resolved quicker than the wait for the car.

I've only got right around 470 miles and I've had mine officially by the paperwork since May 1, 2012, but I picked her up on 5/3/2012.

That is a bit strange... some things that prevent cruise from re-enabling are having your foot touching the brake or clutch, being below a certain speed (around 40 km/h I think), not being in D if it's an automatic.

Like suss6052 said, make sure it isn't off altogether... it should still be indicated in the gauge screen.

Nope, wasn't off. Speed with line through it showing. As I came up on traffic, I hit cancel then when I cleared them a minute later, hit resume. It worked fine when I picked the car up. I tried one time to set speed with + button and it worked but most of the time I had to turn it off and back on.

That seems odd, since mine has responded every single time I've used it. Cancel and resume are the same button, symmetrically opposite the voice command button, the on/off switch is in the middle of the rocker below set + and above set -, using set - to decelerate can also force the DCT to downshift to at or over 4000 rpm from 60 or 70 mph.

Is there something wrong with the car? That seems really strange that you'd have to resort to turning it off and on to re-set the cruise control.

I will have to play with it some more on the road but it is almost like once it cancels it just locks it out of any Resume feature. Like I said, all the functions worked correctly when I picked it up but something has happened. Speed control still works, tap up and tap down (+/-) still work and cancel works but the Resume half of the button doesn't appear to be working. I was on the interstate running 75 at the time.

I have never used the cancel option. I always just touch the brakes if I come up on something going slow than my cruise speed. Then resume always works when i am around the slowness.

Have you tried that versus actually hitting cancel? Just as a troubleshooting step?

I have not tried the brake cancel yet, I will have to do that. This morning on the way home from dropping our daughter at school, I took a route that put me on the interstate for a bit. At first the dern speed would not even set and then I got to noticing I was being too fast. The display says "standby" when you first hit the power on button. A couple seconds later, that goes away and a picture of the car comes back. Then you can set the speed. Once set, I hit cancel and the speed control went to standby with line through set speed. When I tried to resume, same button as cancel, it would do nothing. Ok, let's try just hitting the + button. Nope, how about - button, nothing!! Had to hit the center section, power off, then set speed again. So, I thought I would try the other functions of speed up and down, even though I knew those to be working. Well, hitting the + button resulted in speed increases in 1 mph increments as it should but half the time, tapping the - button resulted in speed control going to standby and no longer controlling!!! WTH!!! If there is a speed control part that needs replacing, I hope it is the control unit under the hood and not something requiring disassembling the steering wheel!! I don't know that I would let them do that. Very annoyed right now but I will have to try the brake pedal method later today.

Afternoon electech,

This is so weird! My team member Cory owns a Focus, and we had a conversation about the Speed Control feature. We’re wondering if the off versus the cancel button was pressed. I found the following note on page 143 of the Owner Guide.

Note: When you turn off the speed control or the ignition, your speed control set speed memory is erased.

Let me know, okay? I’ll continue researching from my end.

firescue0,

Philly is right around the corner from my childhood home - Allentown. I'm interested in knowing if the Speed Control feature is behaving itself; give us an update when you have a chance.

Take care!

Noemi
