First Oil Change on 2013 HB Titanium

Hey guys, at how many miles should I get my first oil change done?

My dealer told me to come back at 7500. Most of my other cars were every 5000 miles.

Mine is in for the 3rd change. I have ~15600KMs (~9360 miles). Car has been on the road since November 2012. So my personal rule is based on time, not miles/KMs. I get the winter/summer tire rotation in the spring/fall and get the service done at the same time, which includes oil/filter change.

Thanks for the info guys.

But does anyone know the actual recommended mileage for an oil change?

That depends on what type of oil you are using. First thing you should do is check the owners manual. There is a maintenance schedule there which will tell you when all the services are due.

But back to the oil.... If you are using a non synthetic and your driving style is normal... i.e. no short trips and you allow the engine to reach operating temp and KEEP it there long enough for any moisture to burn off the oil, I would recommend 5000 miles.

HOWEVER, since the MK3 engine is a direct injection engine, the intake valves do not get the benefit of being washed over by a gasoline/air mixture. So they will have a tendency to allow carbon build up as well as gasses that go through the motor, including any burnt oil. If you want to keep the engine as clean as possible as well as extend your change interval, go full synthetic with the oil and pick one with a low NOACK number. Pennzoil Platinum is about the best oil out there currently for the MK3 engine, AND it can be found at WalMart for usually less than $30/5qts. We dont tend to rack up miles on our vehicles, so I change in the spring and fall. That usually amounts to 5-6000 miles between changes. I believe Ford recommends 7500 using their own semi-synthetic blend.

It's in the Owner's Manual. But if you don't want to look there, it's basically whenever the intelligent oil life monitor tells you a change is needed or every 12 months, whichever comes first. The Manual says the expected change interval is up to 10,000 miles depending on driving conditions. Naturally, cold weather, short trips, etc. will shorten this considerably.

That said, Ford is pretty much alone suggesting 10,000 mile intervals are possible in direct-injected engines using a convetional motor oil (virtually any conventional 5w/20 oil meets the relevant Ford spec WSS...945...). As a result, I'd be a bit more cautious, especially if you plan to keep the car a long time. I change every 5,000/6 months, fwiw. And there is a school of thought that the first oil change should be done earlier than that.
