2012 Focus Poor gas mileage

I have a 2012 Focus hatch back with about 16K on it. I have kept good mileage records and the car has never approached the EPA gas figures. I get about 25 in town and about 34 on the highway. These numbers are at least 6 miles per gallon below advertized. Anyone else having this problem?

I'm getting about 25 in town too. The highest ive ever gotten my MPGs is 28, and that was very short-lived. You're not alone on this one.

me too, but I drive it too hard in the city avg 23mpg. Most ever on highway was 34

I think sometimes too, that people think that as soon as they leave the driveway that ~27/37 are going to just pop up. It all depends on where you drive/how you drive, etc upon etc. Those EPA numbers are based on consistent road/highway average light traffic driving conditions right? Not real world let's drive around new york city stop go stop go all day results, because that's what most of us see with our numbers. I live in Baton Rouge now, and my avg hud reads about 28.0 mpg for the week (w/ 18" handling package). But then on the weekend yeah my milage won't jump up to 37 mpg, but "I know I'm getting that" type deal over longer distances. I think people get too over their head about EPA numbers and gas milage addiction. I freak out too, but then I see it average out and no matter what the HUD says, I know if I get X miles out of a tank of gas, I'm happy and my numbers are consistent and "nothing is wrong with my car." Just my thoughts. Sorry some seem to have some "bad luck".

I think it's also a matter of the car breaking in over time. My 08' focus coupe is rated as 35mpg but I was getting 40mpg on my last 2 highway trips (over an hr).

EPA numbers are not guaranteed. Each car is different. And everything factors into MPG's.

that still puts you at the 30ish mpg average they advertise. I avg that in mine, i dont think its bad

Look at the competition. Focus is a 3000lb car, midpack in this segment. Yet performance tests put the Focus up front, and real world MPG tests between the focus and even the most thriftiest compacts in this class are separated by 1-2 mpg tops. The Dart has up to 180hp but is still slower because it is 200lbs heavier than the heaviest focus, and the Sonic is a fata$$ too. The other competitors are all MUCH slower than the Focus. On the performance side, Golf and Mazda3 are 0.3 seconds faster to 60 than a focus, but have 2.5l engines with much worse fuel economy.

Remember also that the Civic and Elantra are the only competitors to advertise 40 mpg or close, and how are they fairing? Hyundai and Kia got their ENTIRE lineup investigated by the EPA and every single car got reduced mpg figures, including the Elantra and smaller Accent, causing such a bad stink they are sending gas cards to customers to make the difference up and prevent further lawsuits. The Civic is a total dog. 140hp on the best day, it still picks up like a lawn mower, and C/D real world testing only managed 1mpg better than a DCT focus. Elantra also 140hp and slow as $hit. Nothing in the class has class leading performance and fuel economy like the focus, so stop crying.

You didn't even mention what trim level you have. If you have the 18" wheels I'd say that's quite acceptable.

I have a '13 Ti. I get 28-32mpg with about a 70 city 30 hwy split. I would consider myself a "spirited" driver. I've gotten 38mpg on a all hwy trip.

I have the sel w 17 inch wheels and i get 22 -25 city in winter and 27-30 summer city. Lots of stop n go w most trips fewer than 5 miles. Hwy always get 36-40 summer n winter
