I'm sorry about continuing this, but why isn't this explained in the Owners Manual. Also I received a call from a Ford Rep who repeated that its normal and will continue for 3 minutes with no key in the ignition and its the tranny setting up to drive off. I asked her - If I get in the car before this 3 minute sequence is complete and start the car and drive off will the tranny be "set up". She said the process SPEEDS UP when the key is put in??? If the process is so fast when the key is inserted, why do we hear "click click whir" for 3 minutes when there is no driver and no key in the ignition. Just a question that I think needs an answer.

Thanks so much for posting that. I emailed my service guy at Ford that there was a service bulletin out about this weird noise that started whenever I opened and shut a front door with no key in the ignition. I have received no answer from anyone at Sanderson Ford in Phoenix, AZ. Now tell me that they have good customer relations. You would think I would have had a recall notice or ??? about bringing the car in to remedy this problem from them. They were great while I was looking for a car, but now when they might have to do something gratis, absolutely nothing.

Don't give them too hard a time. Ford doesn't broadcast these TSBs to the dealerships. Generally, the dealership service department only finds out about a TSB when a customer brings in a car with a specific complaint, and the service guys look up the symptoms in their system.

It isn't a recall or even a "campaign", so Ford (and the dealerships) don't proactively contact owners who may benefit from it. That may be crappy, but every automaker basically does the same thing.

Keep your eyes on this forum. Many people post TSBs and other service bulletins here, and you'll probably see them within a day of their release.

Kinda funny, after the TSB, the shift motors go from running for 5 minutes straight, to not even once. If the point were to warm up the shift motors, you would think they would have found a happy medium.

Alright guys and gals...

I went to the dealer today to get 13-4-18 (click click whirl TSB taken care of), MyFordTouch update and an oil change. And I also told the dealer that my tranny seemed to be shuddering at low speed take offs, intermittently.

Since I've got home, I've noticed (at least for now) the shuddering seems to have went away and also the click click whirl noise, is gone. More specifically, when I open a front door, you can hear the thing almost try to do it once. Then, if you hang out by the car for the duration of the 3 minute mark, you will actually hear it do 1 click click whirl at the end of the cycle. Other than that, it seems to be fine.

As for the shuttering problem, after doing some research on google, it seems I've run across another TSB 13-4-5 that talks about having the tranny software requiring reprogram to the same version as 13-4-18, which is version 84.01.

The questions I do have are...

Does anyone know how many miles the adaptive transmission takes before it's locked in?

If I drive the car hard for a couple hundred miles, will it will finally shift the way I want it too, which is in a more positive manner?

Also, does driving the car in "D" also program the adaptive tranny in "S", or do I need to drive some in "S" so it can learn that mode too?

Thanks, Defender
