I bought a dodge stratus for $7,500 from a rental co a while back, drove the hell out of it for 2.5 years with zero problems and then sold it for $7,000. One of my best purchases.

I dont i used my own insurance with a rental which saves me money and makes me more responsible with the car. Most people do the same as me.

I would rather take the chance on a rental with a little abuse, than possibly getting the used car that the person has abused for the entire life of the car.

And rental car companies keep records on maintenance on the car. To find a used car on the lot with those kind of records, Slim to none.
^^^ This, This, And That! I'm a 20 something year old and EVERY single rental I've ever had I've treated like normal. 1. I Don't pay for their insurance to save money. 2. Why treat it like crap and risk getting into trouble/ You're still paying for the fuel at the end of the day? The harder you drive it, the harder the outcome/ fuel cost is going to be. 3. If the price was right as stated before. Then go for it!

Don't assume every one will drive a rental like you would. Hope for the best, plan for the worst. 1000 people could drive the car. It only takes one to mess it up. Meticulious maintenance records won't mean a thing 10 months in when the tranny goes because some one did a few neutral drops from 6500k.

I would never buy a rental. As long as someone gets the insurance, there's no need for them to be all that careful. Plus, my mom bought an Escort from Enterprise once and although it lasted her longer than I thought (she doesn't drive much), it sounded like a lawn mower and vibrated like crazy the whole time she had it. I am happy to say I helped her get a new 2012 Focus a couple months ago...and she loves it.

When I was younger and I was looking for a used car I looked at a few rentals. My dad steered me away from them by saying: Buying a rental car is like marrying a prostitute.

One of my good friends owns a shop that does leather seats, sunroofs, custom interiors, etc. They get a lot of business from rental fleets selling their used cars that need upgrades. Most of them are in pretty decent condition.... then he pulls the seats out. Most look like a rain forrest with the seats out. If you do happen to buy a rental car, please, pull all the seats out and rent yourself a good seam cleanner to get all the crap out.

My dad's retired and works part time for Enterprise in Florida. He's continually horrified at some of the cars when they're returned. The ones that aren't returned have to be sent after, because they were used to haul drugs to or from Miami. People even tint the windows so you can't see in. Food spilled everywhere, cigarette burns and sometimes drugs are left behind. Body damage is the norm, and they've fished a few out of the local lakes too. There's just no way I'd buy someone elses' retired nightmare.
