Gas pump kept shutting off prematurely
I have a 2012 5-door and I stopped to get gas today. I had about 1/4 of a tank, but the pump would only dispense about 1.5 gallons before shutting off. I had to do this several times just to get up to half a tank.
I'll try a different pump/station tomorrow to see if that is the culprit. Has anyone else had trouble filling up? |

Try holding the nozzle so it is pointing straight down the filler tube, not just letting it rest and hang by itself.

usually a bad fuel filler neck or charcoal canister can cause this. your fuel filler neck may have a spider web in it blocking vapor movement or if you top of your tank, the charcoal canister might be full of fuel and unable to process fuel vapors from filling up.

I've never had a problem with the wife's Focus, but my '04 Ranger is terrible for this. Oregon has no self-serve and as soon as the station attendant walks away the pump clicks off. Pain in the butt when you're in a hurry.

I went to a different gas station this morning. At first it acted up like before and would only accept about 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon before clicking off. I tried filling the tank very slowly and it still clicked off right away. I then started holding the pump handle up so it didn't rest on its own weight and it filled about 2 more gallons before clicking off. At no point did it fill correctly.
I never had to do anything out of the ordinary before, I just pumped gas like any other car I've owned. It makes me wonder why Ford opted for the cap-less fuel filler instead of using a cap design that has been working perfectly ever since it was first created. I've only had the car since June, so I can't imagine any of the filters would be clogged. Misfire, how can I go about trying to clean spider webs out? And how can I make sure they dont just move back in. And why didn't Ford do that in the factory? |

the factory wouldn't have had to do it. If it was like that back then, the car would have been like this when you bought it. (not a Ford issue. I have worked for VW and Hyundai and it happens to them as well). The way we do it at the dealership is take the fuel filler neck out and blow it free with an air line. It's easy for spiders to go behind fuel door and down the filler neck. I try not to park under trees as to try and avoid this with my car. I would just call your dealership and schedule an appointment for Diagnostics. My educated guess is either a fuel filler neck issue or a faulty charcoal canister or possibly a faulty purge canister valve. |

Don't live or drive up dirt roads often do you? My work truck, an f150, sometimes gets dust in the fuel filler causing blockage throughout the whole system

I'll call my dealer and see what they say, but you are basically telling me there is no way to prevent this from happening again? Ugh. Brilliant design.
