Avg. Price of Clutch Install?

So my clutch is burned out and my gf dad was "helping" since he burned it out..... Anyways he was going to have me go to a friend that a mechanic, but there a few signs poping up that worried me but I might be wrong? First he wants 800bucks.. Says it'll be about 8-10 hours, so first charging me regular price, he needed my vin to see what kind of trans-axles and transmission I had, told him I had a 2003 SVT. He argued with me that my car was a 5speed and that all SVT where a 5 speed that had a MTX transmission... and up to 3 diffrent stock trans-axles.... He tried to throw around some words to confuse me and then talked about his sons civic... ? I'm not sure but I got lost some where. and he also saying don't worry I'll flush the trans also for you, but if he think or his program says its the MTX he'll kill my transmission, should I just say forget him and go to the Ford Dealer ship that right across from my work? They labor is actually decenty priced they try to get you on the parts but I buy my own parts... They queted me around 550-600 should I just get it towed there? Where I know the people that work there and hopefully more reiliable? Also he said don't worry I'll test the clutch out for you, I'm affaird he also might do something stupid and glaze it over...

If its $800 for parts and labor, thats pretty good. If its labor only, it looks like you've already found a better deal.

The guy seems kind of shady if you ask me.

Take it to Ford. Seems like their labor rate is pretty good for a dealer, about $100. per hr. Forget 'bout that other guy.

+1,000,000,000!!! That guy sounds like a complete moron! Sounds like he is just trying to push over his "superior" mechanic knowledge on you when he doesn't know what the hell he is talking about! I agree with the others. Take it to your Ford dealer. As much as I hate to say that, it sounds like your best option to get the work hopefully done right and reasonably priced unless you know another mechanic with good knowledge with these cars and that you actually trust.

How far are you from Maryland? If you ain't far I'd say screw it and come down and help you do it yourself. I got my clutch around $400 and put it in with buddys and dad's help. You'll need air tools and engine hoist would make it a lot easier. It was PITA but it can be done yourself. All I require is cold beer :)
