Strange car won't start issue

All,
Has anyone else had this happen? Drove to work today, but, stopped for Gas. Filled up and then car wouldn't start. All lights coming on like normal, radio and such, but, the last part of key turn when car should crank..Nothing at all. Dead. Tried several time..same thing. I put car in N and then P and it said Transmission Ready. Tried to start..still nothing. I popped the hood and didn't see anything. Closed and tried again. This time, got small crank (sounded like dead battery) and car started. Got to work turned off and tried again..same results..small crank, but, started. Turned off and then started like normal. I let car sit 4 hrs and went out for lunch..started no problem. WTF? Battery issue? Starter issue?
Just another thing to kill my confidence on this car. I have had it 18 months with endless transmission issues and other small things. Going to see if I can get out of my lease early.

Have you tried running a vehicle health report?

I had a similar issue the other week. However my car would crank over, but it was much slower then normal. I had to jump the car as I tried starting it 5 or 6 times. Everything worked fine, just wouldn't start. Hasn't happened since. Best that I could test myself the battery was fine but might have been alittle low on voltage in my case.

I was just reading about TSB 12-5-5 and it mentioned one of the reasons was a no start condition because of the coolant sensor. Might be an idea.

Confirm your battery clamps are tight...then put a trickle charger on it over night...if that doesnt do it, you need service

Update: I ran vehicle heath..all is fine. I called the dealer who told me to bring it in. I dropped it off and got a loaner for tomorrow. When I left work, It barely started again. A friend of mine gave me this battery tester that you put in the 12V adapter in the car. It lit Yellow and not green, so, I'm guessing the Battery is bad or Alternator. 16 months in and too many problems. I have a 36 month lease and really want out early, but, don't think the dealer is going to entertain that. I'd even go with another Ford, just not this Focus with Tranny issues.

Starting issues like this have gotten more complicated over the years.

Battery - the lights go dim and the solenoid still clicks.

Other Issue - no crank at all with no dimming of the lights or clicking.

For the Other Issue the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) commands the start circuit and a few things are needed such as the transmissionin N or P like you noted, but also a properly programmed key. The Body Control Module (BCM) stores the key information and it sends it to the PCM telling it that the key is correct. Things that can inturrupt the process include a misadjusted switch on the gear position to CAN Bus wiring issues between the PCM and BCM...all fault code stuff and hopefully discoverable.

The only other thing I can suggest to anyone else experiencing this is to also try the spare key to see if it will then start.

Hi damianinpa,

I'm happy to get you escalated to your regional CSM. Shoot me a PM with your VIN, dealer, mileage, full name, and daytime phone number; I'll get your info in the right hands.

Thanks for all the great ideas, folks!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, reach out to me via PM and I'll see how I can help.

Thanks,
