Fuel Filter 2005 zx3

Hi everyone

My wife has a 05 ZX3 that has been having problems starting when cold. It starts but where it used to take about one second for the car to start it is now taking about 2.5 seconds or so.

I am not real concerned about it but she is and I thought that the fuel filter may need changing since we have about 80k on it and it has not been done.

So I got a new filter and went to change it today. Everything that I have found says that the filter is either A) in the tank B) in front of the tank or C) on the passenger side near the suspension.

It is not on the right, I have followed the fuel line all the way from the tank forward. I obviously have not dropped the tank just to look for the filter.

However, in front of the tank is what looks like a plastic housing that has two hoses running into it and one nut in the front holding it in place. I pulled the nut off to see what was there but I cannot get past that. The da** thing won't move even after removing the nut.

So, my questions are where is the filter? What is the plastic housing in front of the tank if it is not for housing the fuel filter? If it is the housing for the fuel filter how do I get it off so I can replace the filter?

It should be changed every 30k. I do mine every 15 to 20k. It is better on the fuel pump I think plus not as hard to change as a fuel pump.

We have a How-To on changing the filter. It's for an earlier model, but the procedure and location is the same. The fuel filter is located under the car about 18" from the edge, in front of the fuel tank on the passenger side (rt side) of the vehicle. Follow the exhaust, it makes a 90 degree turn crossing over to the other side (left side) of the car. Just to the rear of the car from that turn is the fuel filter.

1) Never remove the white part of the clip from the clip. Press on the flat white spot, and push it into the line at this point to remove it.
2) One clip will be easy to see and remove, the other clip will be turned around backwards. Follow the line away from the filter about 6", and you'll see another white clip that you can remove much easier. Remove this small section of line with the fuel filter, then you can rotate it on the ground and remove it correctly.
3) Never remove the white clip from the fuel line connector, all you have to do is press on it and it will release. Pushing the fuel filter into the line sometimes help release the clip if it's in a bad spot. Then pull it apart.
4) Don't lay under the fuel filter when you remove one of the lines, fuel will spill out on your face. Gasoline in the eyes is not fun. Gasoline in the mouth is not fun later that night.
5) I highly recommend disconnecting the fuel cut-off switch to discharge fuel pressure from the line. I have tried disconnecting the fuel pump fuse, and the engine ran sputtering for a long time when I tried starting. This doesn't happen with the FCS method, and the fuel system is discharged so fuel doesn't spray violently.

Fuel filter How-To information.

This one says to remove the fuse, then shows you a picture of where the fuel cutoff switch is, and a representation of the fuel cutoff switch which is behind the passenger kick panel. To unplug you have to remove the kick panel (2 screws), then the unplug the connector from the bottom of the switch. After that, try to start the vehicle twice. It shouldn't start, crank only for a short time. That is all that is needed to discharge the fuel system. http://www.myfordfocus.com/how-to/fuelfilter.htm

I thought we had a better description written by an FF member, but I can't seem to find it. It is a fairly simple procedure- although it might seem daunting at first. Also, if you have any O'Reilleys Auto parts nearby, their Microguard filters come with the correct replacement clips in case you feel like you just have to remove the white clip from the line- you'll have the right one to replace it. Removing the clip will break it 99% of the time.

Do you need a tutorial? Advice? The most important thing is making sure that you jack the vehicle up safely and securely. If the car is a manual transmission, you should purchase some wheel chocks for the front wheels. Bricks are probably ok if you have one in front and one in back of the opposite wheel from where you are jacking the vehicle. It is ok to use the emergency jack for this procedure if you use it correctly.

I found it! Got it changed out. Didn't take too long but can someone tell me why in the hell when you have something that has one bolt holding it in they have to place the bolt in the most inaccessible place? The bolt is on top of the filter and there is less than an inch to get any kind of tool in there to get to it. I wound up buying a small 1/4 inch wrench so I could get it out.

Yeah usually a 1/4 ratchet with at least a 3" extension with a deep well 5/16 or 8mm socket. Did that solve the problem?
