04 focus , 2.3 auto. tranny slips.

So , im interested in purchasing an 04 focus sedan. it has a the 2.3 engine with auto tranny. owner says it slips and only goes into 1st and 2nd. I did a quick search but didnt find anything.

he only wants 600obo for the car and i need a beater for winter and a donor 2.3 for my zx3. any ideas if this could be a simple fix so i could drive it over the winter ? thanks for the help.

Well my 04 with a 2.3 just blew the whole tranny, more metal shavings than a machine shop, so I would say the rest is good, tranny, not so good. My repair bill for a reman trans is $2300 for a 5 year 75k warranty.
Drop the pan and see, could be a solenoid, simple fix.

thanks , im hoping its nothing major. because for the price its worth it , even if i just swap the engine into my zx3. but it be nice to have a winter beater.

No problem, even worse case scenario and the trans is bad, its seems like a good deal.

600 isnt bad. As f250 stated drop the pan and look for shavings or bits in the tranny fluid. If there are Id lowball the price

well i got the car for 400 bucks. it still moves , but it clunks and slips and jerks.

i didnt bother to pull the pan , because i found a good used tranny for 200 bucks. gunna put that one in and pull apart the old one and if its not too bad , ill rebuild it and have a good tranny.
