2012 focus fuel tank capacity question

I just purchased this car a little over week ago and just want to know if this sounds right. I'm getting pretty much 400 kilometers (250 miles) predominately city driving to a tank. Thats 9.25 L/100 or 25 MPG. When I say tank I mean when the fuel light comes on. At that point I put in 37 litres (9.7) gallons. I do believe this car has a 47 Litre (12 Gallon) gas tank. Is my guage reading right? Is there actually almost 10 litres (2 1/2 gallons) left with that light on? That seems like a lot of fuel left for reserve.

Hi Darth_Focus,

Your vehicle has a 46.9 L / 12.4 gallon fuel tank. Low fuel warnings are displayed in the message center followed by a chime when the distance to empty value reaches 75 miles (120 km). If you are concerned about your vehicle's fuel economy, I'd advise that you make an appointment at your dealership so they can inspect and diagnose.

Feel free to reach out to me via PM if you have other questions.

Thanks,
Crystal

Crystal, my low fuel warning light usually goes on around 40 miles. It varies, though so I suspect it has more to do with the level in the tank than the trip computer's estimated range. Or maybe this is one more area where no two Focuses behave the same...

You're probably right. I filled up my car with "1 mile to E" and it only put like 11.4 gallons in. It doesn't really bother me because at least I still have gas...? Better it be conservative.

I'm good with having a reserve like that, I just wanted to make sure it was normal. What this focus does on 37 litres my Vibe did on 50.

If you do mostly city driving that involved some stop-and-go and waiting at lights 25mpg is actually better than many are getting. The Mk3 FF isn't great for stop-an-go...

I am getting on a regular basis 7.1 L/100km But that is due to mostly highway driving. I have been able to maintain that level even on days that I have to use the streets to get home, I have to go into super hyper miler mode to maintain that. So slow to go, very slow to stop and I coast as much as I can. I try to have a large gap between me and the car ahead of me in traffic. That way I am still rolling while they have come to a complete stop. The less I am at a complete stop, the less fuel I burn.

Mine comes on around there but even when I run it down to 0 miles left it still never really is a 'full' fill up.

Not that its a bad thing, a safety reserve is a welcome thing to have and I fill up most times before 0 indicated range anyways.

That's my technique, and I can get that (equivalent of 33US MPG) any day of the week, even with some city driving, using 87 octane.

I, however, got 36.9US MPG on my last tank, same conditions and techniques, using premium ethanol-free gasoline. You should try the same. I am 1.5mpg down midway through the current tank, when I switched back to E10 87 octane.
