How Risky Does this Wagon Look? (Don't want a rust bucket!)

To sum it up - what are the chances that a 11+ year old Focus from Owensboro KY is fairly rust free? That is, the body still having a good 10+ years of serviceable life left? Having lived my whole life in the warm & dry south, I never had to worry about it when buying used cars.

I've basically been looking for this exact car for almost 4 months now. A 2001, 5spd, "Street Edition" wagon with ABS, cruise, side airbags, rear headrests, tilt... yadda yadda.

I've read that only 1500 Street Edition wagons (unique colors of red, yellow, and blue, 16" wheels, black moulding trim, unique rear spoiler) were made. I imagine many less were optioned like this. This one has been listed for sale for a good two months, but priced $1,000 higher. It being in KY, and me being in AZ, I initially dismissed it. Now with the price drop, and the fact that I haven't found another for sale, I'm reconsidering. The price drop allows me to pay for shipping the car to AZ.

I would pay for a 3rd party to inspect the car - something like www.aimmobileinspections.com

Good plan, or am I wasting my time?

Eh, KY doesn't really get a ton of snow like places more northern climates. I ordered my car with Ford's factory rust prevention. It might be likely that a fully optioned wagon would also have that ordered with it.

5 spd wagons are rare- regardless of what engine is in it.

Thanks for the tip - haven't spent much time in KY, especially not in the winter.

Yes, I've cruised thousands of Focus for-sale adds over the last few months. I actually found a couple dozen 5 spd wagons, but VERY few that have the side-impact airbags & ABS (AKA Safety Package). And this one, the color is just beautiful :)

Needs a little tlc but looks pretty good. At 3k it might be slightly more than I would pay for the mileage but seems to be clean. Good luck

I would just ask the dealer to snap some photos of the underside and email them to you. If it has been listed for a while, I am sure he would do it. If it looked good I would fly out to inspect it myself and drive it home. Kinda make a mini vacation out of it, since you would be spending $1,000+ on inspection and delivery. That would easily cover airfare, food, gas and lodging. I drove from Chattanooga(east Tennessee) to Phoenix in 2 1/2 days, would probably be about the same from Kentucky. Make a car buying adventure of it.

I live in Ky, so I feel like I can answer this. lol All of our cars are rust free (lived here for 15 or so years now). The last few winters havent been bad at all...last year it only snowed 2 or 3 times, never really had any accumulation. There is usually a few good snows here in the average winter though. There has been 2 or 3 times where we have gotten over a foot of snow since I have lived here. That wagon looks clean, I say go for it.

I live north of there and I get a lot more ice than snow. You are more than likely fine on the frame and body for rust. More than likely the exhaust is about rusted off and in need of replacing if anything.
