Focus Misfire/Stutter when fuel gets low
I have an 01 Zetec focus, 5spd... has roughly 84k miles....
car use to stutter after fuel gauge came on.... then a couple months later it started doing it as soon as low fuel gauge came on.... now its at the point when i get to about an 1/8th tank it starts doing it now.... any idea what is causing this?? ive never had any type of problem like this in the past with any vehicle i've owned.... it starts stuttering and misfiring.... and gets worst as i give it gas, but lightens up a bit as i ease off the gas.....

Same here. Mine started skipping and stalling at about 1/4 tank about 2 months ago. Then it happened after a fillup last month. I must have stirred up some crap in the tank.I know I have to do my fuel pump and filter soon. It was my plan a few weeks back, but my wallet nixed that.

its strange, cuz ive had the car over a year now and it just started doing it in the last 4 months, ive ran the car down to nearly empty before with no problems....

Well, it's a well known problem with the early Focus. There was repair offered through Ford for 10 years. I've also read that the ethanol mix in the ethanol fuel cleans all the crud in the fuel tank and it has to go somewhere. I never had mine replaced. So I have to drop the tank or cut an access hole in my floor.

Thanks for the write up. Appears to be basically the same as making my access panel for my firebird.
So if I clean out my tank and strainer on fuel pump that should solve my problem? I'll probably do it when I'm low on fuel to make it easier plus less wasted fuel then.
