Be careful. I cracked my original grill. When you clean everything out, it's very flimsy. There will be absolutely no support. Then it's PITA to try and shape the mesh. You might wanna have a spare grill ready just in case.

Once you get the shape you want, you should be able to cut out the rest. I don't remember, but if there's one near the middle I'd leave it in.

This is the only pic I could find. My other laptop crapped out and I lost all my pics. I did have it painted red for awhile. I thought it looked pretty good.

I love the top grille. I think I will pick up a spare grille sometime and try this sometime.

Did you remove the original grille like cross bars when you did the top?

I gutted the whole thing, lights and all. I ended up with just the outside piece. But where the mesh was placed , it was very uneven. It's impossible to get it just right. The more I tried to dremel out the rough uneven surfaces, the weaker it got. By then I had lost most of the original shape. That's where a backup grill would have helped me. I had no reference to go by. I've always thought of making one from scratch some day. Once the outside frame is made, I think it would be easy to fit mesh from there. Someday......

i just did my upper grille today in about 90 minutes, and am gonna touch it up more tomorrow when I have alot more time as the gf is outta town :P but even the 90 minute job looks 10x better, only reason im redoing some parts is to better hide screws and stuff like that, and remove all excess from the sides and such, and gut the inside probably. but for $2 and 90 minutes, my front end looks alot better. oh, and ill be doing the lower soon as my foglight kit comes in too!
