Ford on Tuesday showed off a prototype carbon-fiber hood that could be used in high-volume manufacturing of its battery-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Guess the electrics aren't so cost sensitive. Anything special about this material or design that makes it cheaper in volume production?

Less weight is always good for fuel economy.
