Door handle problem??

So my wife has a 2000 Focus LX. No power door locks or anything. The drivers door handle (both the inner and outer) will open the door fine. If using the inner door handle theres no problem. If using the outer one the door doesn't want to close then. Also the handle doesn't return to it's closed position anymore. But even if you hold it in the closed position you have to try to close the door several times before it latches. After searching the forums I don't find anyone have this same problem. Plenty of outer handles that won't even open the door but this one still opens it. Any help is appreciated.
