Code readers..... Anyone recomend one.

Im looking for a code reader to add to my toolkit as we now run 2 focuses (or is it focii).

From my days of driving Vuaxhall cars I had an opcom system that was very simple ans easy to use, it was basic, but i only ever wanted to use it as a code reader. Is there anything anyone can recommend for me to use in a similar way. Again, I dont want to do much other than be able to read fault codes should any be thrown up in the future.

I am looking about but most of the readers on offer seem to state "for petrol cars 2001 and newer" one of our focuses is a 2000 and I would like something that will work with both. If it will work with other cars as well its a bonus.

2000 or 01 shouldn't matter. All code readers are pretty much the same. The main thing is that all will come with a book giving a short description of the DTC meaning. This is where things get goofed up. Regardless of manufacturer or vehicle, you should look up the DTC meaning on a website or in a manual specific to the vehicle. On Focis, for example, there is a code that indicates a bad O2 sensor according to the code reader description, but it could simply be a fuse as indicated in a more lengthy, specialized description. We have a list of DTC's and their meanings.

I never had much luck with them every time I had a car that had a problem! It Would not read the code or the stored code
