Does the dealer have to do it?
Under warranty, does oil changes have to be done by the dealer? Dealer stated they need to do it.
or can a different garage or myself do it without losing warranty coverage? thanks in advance |

They don't have to be done by the dealer but if someone at an independent shop messes something up such ad an overfill or a loose filter its in your hands and your more than most likely to pay more, saving $15 isnt always worth it, dealer work is always guaranteed and is LIKELY to be done right

Where am I?

I look at it this way, if you don't want to deal with it. Let them change the oil for you. If you enjoy crawling under the car and getting oil dumped all over you, then by all means buy the oil yourself and have at it. But as for worry about the warranty? I have never heard anything about an oil change HAVING to be done by the dealership. I think the salesman was trying to make you think that so you would feel compelled to bring the car in for service there and be charged four times more than what it would cost to do it yourself.

The dealer I work at charges $20 for that service (oil/filter/fluid-top-off/rotate). They ask their customers to bring them back here because they have a "engine for life" warranty that they tout... as long as we do the service; if the engine gets funked up-> they replace it for free.
Could be something like that.
