An easy way to find TDC without timing marks is to pull the spark plug of #1 cylinder and stick a clean pen or rod into the cylinder and feel the stroke of the piston, if you can pull the valve cover and watch the valves to ensure its at TDC for the compression stroke.

What drives the crank timing chain gear is the timing chain gear gets pinched between the crank and the hub/balancer , that pressure pinched between the crank and hub/balancer turns the timing chain gear which turns the chain

Turn the engine in the direction that it runs, and watch the valves the intake valve will open durring piston downstroke for the intake then both valves will close for the conpression stroke upwards, the valves will remain closed for the downward power stroke then the exhaust valve will open for the exhast stroke the its repeats.
