E10 versus E0, my observations

I've been using Fuelly.com to track my mileage in all of my vehicles since 2008. It's an awesome website for those who are serious mpg trackers.

On to the reason for my thread.....

The debate has been wide spread about using E0 100% pure gasoline or E10 up to 10% ethanol gasoline. Of course it's a common fact that E10 will result in lower mpg, but not enough to constitute struggling to find E0 gasoline. In my area, only E0 89 octane is available at the pump (very few locations).....E0 93 octane is only available at boat docks/marine use (over $5.00 per gallon - no thank you).

What I have concluded from testing both E0 89 and E10 93 octane in my car. On average, 89 E0 cost ~.40 cents more per gallon at the pump compared to 93 E10. My car averages 1.7 mpg better per tank with E0 89 octane, however....the peppy response I get with 93 E10 fades away.

E10 93 - average cost = 15.4 cents per mile (city driving)
E0 89 octane - average cost = 15.7 cents per mile (city driving)

I pay 1/3 cent more per mile to use E0, yet have only 1 reliable place to buy it, and that's far out of my way most of the time. It's simply not worth it.

Conclusion:

The increased price of 89 E0 is not worth the mpg increase or slight loss of engine peppy response compared to 93 E10 fuel.

Yeah if you are paying that much more for it it isn't worth it. Here it is only a 6 cents difference from E0 to E10

odd how different regions have different fuel. The gas station I regularly use has 87 E10 and the E0 is 91. about the same price difference, .40. I run 87 in the daily drivers and 91 in the high performance and seasonal stuff. It would be tough to make up the difference of the added cost in fuel savings so I'll stick with the 87.

I've never seen it less than ~.25 cents higher per gallon for 89 E0 here, compared to 93 E10. Only 6 cents more is a bargain. I would always buy 89 E0 if it were only that little of difference. We are not so lucky here in Florida.

I'm curious on how 89 E10 compares to these in the Focus. Do you have any experience with fuel economy and power response with this, by any chance?

I use strictly E10 93 octane gas in my Focus. And fuelly says I'm getting a consistant 34.57-34.59 mpgs per tank. What about you? My display is dead on as well as its been displaying 34.5 mpgs for the past 2,400 miles.

I have come to the conclusion long ago that running E0 vs. E10 in my car isn't worth the 1 mpg gain nor the increased price. Plus I've noticed my car doesn't care which one is put in. Tho if I can get the E0 cheaper or at the same price as the E10 I'll go for it.

You ought to try it for a few tanks and see. The car will run and perform much better and you should see an increase in MPG's. I think at the worst it would be a net wash, money wise, with a better performing car. I only wish I could get E0 91. I run E10 91 and see about an 8% increase in MPG's, but the car is clearly happier, just like the owners manual says.

Since I drive in bumper to bumper traffic inside the city mostly, I only get about ~27 mpg. My display says I get about 28.5

Best I have seen is 34.1 on a highway trip.

You and I have come to the same conclusion. E0 isn't worth the extra money.

After monitoring over a span of 6 tanksfull, I have observed that the dash indicator mpg is much more accurate when burning pure gas than when burning E10. When burning E10, the actual mpg is typically 5 mpg less than the dash indicated mpg. Probably has to do with the lower energy content of E10, but I'll leave it to the scientist/engineers to analyze the reasons why this is the case. But that is what I have observed.
