Wrench Light Issue

Hey all,

I searched the forum and found related threads, but all seemed older...

I've got a 2008 Ford Focus, 82k, just about all highway miles.

A few days ago my wrench light went on, gas light went on even though I had almost a full tank, followed by the mileage display to just appear as "-----", also the speedometer went down to "0" even though I was still driving just fine. I pulled over, turned car off, restarted, everything back to normal.

Yesterday, same exact thing, while I was cruising at about 70mph on the highway. I got off an exit to restart like I previously did but this time while sitting at a traffic light off the exit I went to move again and the car didn't seem like it wanted to come out of 1st (automatic). RPMs got up there even though I was barely going 20ish, I dont know exactly because the speedometer was still saying "0". Eventually stopped, restarted, back to normal.

I brought it to the dealer to get it diagnosed as they didnt have a clue when I explained the issue. Any insights as to what I can expect?

Thanks much
Joe

Vehicle Speed Sensor could be the culprit.

Thanks for the reply. I am hoping it is some sort of computer/sensor issue that can be reset or the like without too much work.

I have read on here that many people have had a Throttle Body/TBS issue with the same scenario.

Thoughts?

Negative, with a TPS problem your car will exhibit some other signs of problems other than just the dash. When you accelerate you'll hear popping in the exhaust and the car won't accelerate like it did before. Engine power will drop considerably, and the engine will protest any change in throttle position.

Your problem is most likely the VSS, but could also be a bad instrument cluster. The "wrench" light is actually a light for a transmission fault. Check your owner's manual for more information on what those lights mean. I'd go with a bad VSS, damaged VSS wiring before I'd replace an instrument cluster.

Vehicle Speed Sensor was exactly what I was told was the issue...

The dealer said they would have to order the part, as it is not in stock and that they could do all the work there.

They gave me an estimate of $228 for the part and labor, does this seem reasonable?
