Car pulls to one side....wooshing noise.

I do not own a focus, but I am looking for someone with a little mechanical knowledge to help me out with my 93 Ford Tempo.

I recently did a complete brake job. New lines, new master cylinder, new rotors, etc. Everything to stop the car is new.

Everything was also bled too.

So I have a few questions...

1. The plastic dust guard behind the rotor on the Drivers side was gone, does that guard actually have a purpose? I notice many cars do not have them.

2. My brake booster makes a "woosh" every time I step on the brakes, although there is vac assist on the brakes.

3.The pedal seems to go down a little bit before the brakes engage, maybe this is just the way the car is?

4. The car pulls to the left while doing a hard brake, cause?

5. The seatbelts are disabled due to repair cost, the shoulder part is all the way back, is this safe?

1. Guard helps keep water & crud off the brakes, not "essential".

2."woosh" noise from booster is usually only noticeable when the car is stopped, engine off - usually masked by other sounds when the car is running.

3. A BIT of pedal travel isn't unusual, shouldn't be MUCH B4 brakes start to engage. How does it feel WITHOUT the engine? Do you get a hard pedal then after the vacuum ia used up? Noticeably less travel with the parking brake engaged would indicate the rear drums aren't adjusted up yet.

4. What about new calipers? do the wheels turn easily with the pedal released? SOME pull could be from a "sticky" caliper. Do the calipers "float" properly? They need everything cleaned & lubed to move sideways as the single piston starts clamping to equalize force on BOTH pads. if one moves properly & one doesn't you'll get a lot of "pull".

5. Not sure what you mean by "disabled", not wearing proper belts is certainly note "safe".

Sailor, your number 2 response doesn't make sense to me. I don't think he should be hearing a "whoosh" sound when braking, that sounds like a vacuum leak associated with the brake booster and could easily account for an unresponsive pedal.

I agree with him about car pulling while braking, could be the right caliper is not moving as freely as it should and making the left caliper "stronger" as a result. If this were the case it should be pretty evident in the pad wear on the old pads, a partially seized caliper will result in a ramped pad surface, was this the case on any of the old parts?

6spd - you are absolutely right if it's a constant noise.

I was thinking of the fairly quiet noises you can hear when applying & releasing the brake while there is still vacuum available after the engine has been turned off. (vacuum reservoir) Sometimes this can be heard if the car operates quietly enough even when running.

As usual, it's hard to hear if it sounds "normal" from a distance - and all I can suggest to the O.P. is that he compare what he's hearing to the normal noises from another vehicle.

The pedal travel question is another that's hard to diagnose, since many feel different when "normal". Best I can say is that if it doesn't feel "right" it's time to keep checking things for a cause. Drums not adjusted right, caliper slider sticking, air in the system, each has a slightly different "feel" only experience & re-checking of the work can really determine....

Hope to hear more on what he finds looking into it closer....
