Will turn over but won't "catch" or won't turn over at all?
After the mis-shift, did the engine die immediately or was it after you stopped and turned the engine off? Any unusual engine noises or does the motor spin freely (if it spins)? You need three things for an engine to run: fuel (no reason to suspect that's an immediate problem), spark (easy to test), and compression. Given the circumstances you describe, a compression test would seem to be the first priority in order to check for any mechanical damage to valve train or pistons. Compression readings should be roughly equal +/- 5% from lowest reading to highest. Mechanical problems usually give obvious faulty readings i.e. compression of zero or one reading significantly lower than the others. |

I hope you didn't suck the top off a piston.
Had a potential car buyer do that on a test drive in a Cobra, accidentally downshifted to the wrong gear and the piston broke right through the wrist pin, the top half looked like it ran through a blender. When the car wouldn't refire, I looked down the carb and saw aluminum pieces scattered through the intake. The driver didn't stick around long. |
