mine was hard as shit. you can use a wrench forget the size on the bottom of the shifter. its got the pattern for a wrench on it. but they must have used loctite on mine , i had to use vice grips and REALLY put some effort into it

Pull the boot up and around, there are two flatened edges you can get a wrench around. Once you pop it loose, its easy to spin.

there is a rubber grommet like thing that the shift stick screws into on the shift knob. This is what makes it so tight. Once you break the hold the first time, you will be able to get it off when ever you want. But yeah, the fit from the factory is REAL tight. Use an open ended wrench or some ViseGrips to get that b**ch off.

Mine was a bitch... I have to go buy some super cool vice grips (kinda fun when a little project forces you to buy tools) and I have to wrench that on that thing. The aluminum is soft too. I slightly crushed it but works fine. Those wrench flats were useless.
