Pikes Peak Hill Climb, added to Bucket List
I am doing my focus build and coming to the long finish stretch. I will like to have it done in the next year. Upon my sadness of not having it done this summer I was on Netflix looking at what auto motive shows they may have. This is when I was introduced to Pikes Peak. Being In Utah its not that "far" of a drive to Colorado. I am interested in adding this to my bucket list and doing it in the next 5-6 years.
Does any one know what will need to be upgraded on my focus to enjoy this type of event. I understand I wont have any 800 BHP rally car and be under 10 min... or 15 min... My car when done being built will be around 350 HP. I will have upgraded SVT brakes front and rear. I am guessing I will need to address my cooling system, but have not seen much "performance" radiators. I am guessing I may actually benefit from having a wing on this kind of race or while a standard tactful looking spoiler/wing work well enough for the speeds. With the track all paved now I am guessing that a spoiler is not as needed with no dirt left. Has anyone taken their Focus to Pikes Peak to do a fun Time Attack or Open Class. This is out in the future but trying to get an idea on what a "stock" type of car should expect. Thanks!!

Personally, I would build a rally cage first, you go off course, you could be rolling for a while.

I had a few "personal" races up the peak with my Eclipse and that was when it was still dirt toward the top. I plan on taking the STI up there before summer's over.
Even if you don't see a race there the drive is so worth it.

I have read through the rules and regulations but I am still a little confused on what I might need. I have determined that I would NOT be in the Open class rather the Time Trial.
Sounds like I need a full roll cage and the specifications are very clear on that. Need to have padding. I was going to eventually get that once I turn my car into a track only car. But do I need a new steering wheel? sounds like it needs to be a removable kind. Also sounds like I need to have an external battery kill switch. Need to have a full fire suit. Do I need a full vehicle fire suppression system? the rules make it sound kind of like it does. Looks like I need a full 5 point harness and the rules are clear on that down to how old the belt can be. the spoiler rule is clear. Do I need a toe strap on the throttle also? it is just not completely clear what all is required for the other classes vs the time trial class. Guess its mostly on the safety. Do I need a non factory steering wheel (non -airbag race wheel?) and do I need a engine bay and passenger compartment fire suppression?

They, to the best of my knowledge, have rule reciprocity with other series. If your car fits the rules for a series they accept, then it's good to go. With Rally America and NASA you don't need plumbed in fire suppression or a removable steering wheel. Rules are always confusing, and the best way to sort it is simply to go to the series website and find contact info for a tech director or scrutineer. Email them directly and they'll be the best to answer what you need. |

^^this
I'd go get some local hill climbs under your belt before tackling what looks to be an invitation type event.

I was going to... that's why its on the bucket list... :-) I was also going to get a number of years of track and other NASA and SCCA events under my belt.

Pikes peak is now completly paved. They have taken most of the challenging parts away. I will never like the idea of rhys millen getting the new world record when the previous record was done when the track was 70 percent dirt and gravel. I don't care if it was raining.
