Noise Reduction

My Focus is very quiet compared to my 2012 Civic, but I would like to reduce the road noise further. My commute is around 200 miles a day. Any ideas?

I've got an SE Hatch with the 16" sport package. Overall, I think Ford did a darn good job as the car is impressively quiet.

One thing I have noticed though is the factory Continentals, while pretty quiet most of the time, tend to make a noticeable amount of road noise when driving on concrete. More so at highway/interstate speeds (50+)

Not sure if changing to a different tire would improve this, but it could be worth a try. My experience has been that some tires are definitely noisier than others. YMMV

There may be something to be said for what size wheel you have as well, but I believe that's usually a ride quality vs handling concern rather than noise.

I have a hatch and a dog. When I fold down the seat I use a 6ft by 8ft canvas tarp to cover everything. When I am not hauling my dog around I fold the tarp and put it in the trunk area. I found that this helps to reduce road noise. Also, I bought some some thick carpet, cut it, and put it in the rear footwell extending under the front seats. I have a set of Weather Tech carpet liners in the front. All of this seems to help and did not cost much. I agree with Hodge Podge about the tires. You may want to check with Tire Rack and see which tires they recommend to reduce road noise. Good luck.

Or you could replace the horrid Dunlops with better tires.

Best bet is to dynamat the wheel wells... that's where most of the noise is coming from. Isn't too hard to do, really, and makes a huge difference (especially the rear wheel wells).

There already is quite a bit of insulation in the rear wheel house inside the car behind the trim, not sure on how easy it would be to fit more in though.

Your Ford dealer might offer a coating of your entire undercarriage with their soundproofing. I got it for free when I bought mine, made a HUGE difference.
