I'm even more confused by your reply.

In summary, I have a set of Falkens and had a set of Fuzions. The Falkens are a very good dry weather tire but terrible in the ice and snow. The Fuzions (HRi's) are a decent budget daily driver/all around tire with better ice and snow traction than the Falkens, but not anywhere as good as the Conti DWS which I also have. Is that still unclear?

Short of a dedicated snow tire I think that pretty much anything is going to suck in ice and snow, But since we only really get a few weeks of snow around here I can live with the ones that suck the least. I am leaning towards the Generals partly because they have a higher tread life warranty and other General tires tend to get positive reviews

I too have had good luck with the General Altimax tires. From my experience they seem to wear well and give very good traction in wet conditions.

see if you can find a uniroyal dealer. tiger paw. uniroyal was acquired by michelin and the tiger paw is a pilot, just cheaper. put a set on our 2011 kia forte and it is a different car. willdo the same with focus when needed.

We run tiger paws on my wifes 2001 focus wagon. Great tires. good wear, quiet, and have some grip. We dont have much snow here in so. Alabama, but we get a shitload of heavy rain. 2nd set, very pleased. Cost more than $100 per tire, I do believe!

I ended up going with the Falken Ziex ZE-912 partly due to the price. I had a set on my old Taurus and was pleased with them. Time will tell how they are on the Focus, So far they have been good.

All of the most affordable tires come from South Korea now, which includes Fuzion, Nexen, Kumho, Hankook and probably some lesser known brands. I suspect they're all made by the same manufacturer in Seoul. I've got Kumho Ecstas on my car now and have no complaints, minor road noise and a firm ride but great in the wet and probably good in snowy conditions though I've yet to encounter that with these. I've had Fuzion UHPs in the past and they were good tires but didn't last long, but that was probably more due to alignment concerns which have now been corrected. Both of those were the cheapest I could get at Tirerack at the time, which I'm not proud to admit but any new tire is better than bald tires and unfortunately money's always tight for me.

If you're looking for affordable daily driver tires, I wouldn't be disconcerted by the low price of the Korean tires. It's just an exchange/labor rate in our favor and they make a very decent product for the money in my opinion.

One major thing to consider which can't really be quantified: Treadwear ratings are not directly comparable between manufacturers, a higher treadwear rating only means they are a longer lasting tire within that given manufacturers products.
