Lincoln is in the middle of a refresh. New design teams and ideas are starting to roll out. I wouldn't doubt a few models get the axe.

Actually it was partially GM's fault for Saab's demise as they tried to pass off a few products as Saabs(9-2X and 9-7X anyone,a.k.a the Subaru Impreza and Chevy TrailBlazer respectively)that weren't true to the marque's heritage. Their timing of releasing those products was ill advised as well.

Ford pulled out of the van market because of Windstar/Freestar being "late to the party" in the FWD van market(the vans were introduced in 1994,by that time Chrysler already had a 10 YEAR HEADSTART in the market). Not to mention the numerous reliability issues with the vans almost all but killed them(recalls on rear axles breaking, subframes corroding and cracking-to a point where Ford had to buyback some of the vehicles and the infamous AX4S transaxle and 3.8 Essex headgasket failures didn't bode well as far as consumer confidence went).

The same Ford that replaced the Taurus with the 500 and Freestyle.then killed the Freestyle and renamed the 500 as the Taurus?

The same Ford who in the past years have been creating SUV's after SUV's and now crossovers after crossovers? And when the most popular is the Escape with it's rugged truck look and they turn it into a jacked up Focus that looks like a minivan. Not everyone is sold to the idea. And certainly not after the major recalls of the past months.

Yes,you guys are right.Ford really know what they are doing and we got nothing to worry about.
You are quick to nitpick Ford, i ask you to find any automaker who doesn't have an illustrious and hilarious history of cock ups.

Also, the Escape may be having recalls but it's also selling like gangbusters.

Because Ford realized like all other OEMS that people don't really off road so why waste the money?

The 2013 Escape is a 2013 Focus Allroad. Raised, more room, perhaps acceptable at some off terrain use; but no one will ever use it for such a thing and Ford knows that.

Buy a unibody Cherokee or old school wrangler or hell buy the SVT Raptor if off road matters so much.

I work in the industry, and form a numbers stand point stopping Ranger production made sense.

Do you have any idea on how easy it is to talk up somebody from a Ranger to a F-150? With f-150 discounts they where almost the same price as a ranger! Who wants a 30k Ranger when you can get a nice F-150 for 26k or 27k?

"But we city people who want a truck" you city people who want a truck make up such a small part of the market you don't matter. In addition there are many competition in your market segment you still have other options. Now you may be thinking "Why doesn't ford compete in the market" well one thing I learned in business is not every fight is worth fighting for. And the small truck market with it's razor thin margins is not worth the cost.

Now I think a long time ago (mid 2000s) Ford decided not to do no Ranger refreshes. Basically they would reproduce the same truck until sales dropped so low it was no longer profitable. Once they hit that point they cut it off they ran it dry and cut sales.

It takes resources to make a car, it takes production line, mgrs, factory workers, office people, etc. Also if you don't refresh a car every so often sales become stale. However refreshing a vehicle is not a cheap undertaking. Everything has to be tested, new suppliers gained, new production, new training, etc.

Now in a popular car like a Mustang or an F-150 sure the cost is worth it.

Now in years of selling cars I sold very few Rangers. Sure we got our minority who is a majority on this board but you guys are a super small fraction of their business. I think our best Ranger year was long ago.

O by the way the Expedition is going go the same way the Ranger did. It's only lasted longer because it's more profitable. I suspect the Navigator will disappear as well.

1999 230,000 Expeditions where sold
2012 we are expecting 35,000 expeditions to be sold.

A drop of 85%

In 1999 Ford sold 350,000 rangers
In 2011 they did 55,000

A drop of 85% i'm sure the Expedition is next on the chopping block.

Probably not enough to cover the development costs and retooling of a production line. Most likely they have done the analysis and decided that they can make more money producing another model that the new Ranger would have taken the space from.
Exactly.

Almost does not equal did. By the rationale on this board the Cougar would have sold well if they spent a bunch of money giving it a facelift.

Contour/Mistake is the EU Mondeo and it's still one of the best selling cars in it's segment. Yet another example of what works across the pond may not work over here.

Hey, they move with the market. It doesn't mean they don't make mistakes but it means there is a reason they remain profitable. As a former Ford employee I had all kinds of ideas like moving the Falcon over here.... But if you think you can do their job better - apply for it. Armchair quarterbacks don't impress anyone

Ford is looking for a new CEO

I will fully admit I'm wrong if the other small trucks in the segment not only cover the vacum the Ford leaves, but also increase their market share eating into F-150 sales.
