Exclamation Flipkey upgrade

I bought my Focus 2011 used and was given a single key+fob.

I bought a Flipkey upgrade kit on ebay to rid myself of the key + fob keychain.

The upgrade was easy peasy until I had to remove the transponder. I got the key blade cut (it turns in the ignition) and transplanted the keyless curcuitry easy enough. But the transponder, man, this is a problem.

My key is completely sealed. There is no removable door/slot to remove the transponder. Any idea how to get the transponder out of this key? Anyone have a diagram that I can follow to cut it out safely? Tips welcome :)

My key looks like this

Welcome to the forum

If the new flip out key came with a transponder in it then you can just program it to your car. That's if you already have two key that go to the car. If you only have one key then you will have to take it to have the key programmed. There are How To's on programming Ford keys. Just search Google and there will be lots of results. Or you can just butcher the key you have now to get the chip out, but you may damage it breaking into it.

Thanks sleepyboy, that's exactly right.

However I'm asking if anyone knows how to remove the transponder from the key in original post. Any help with this specific question would be greatly appreciated :)

Sorry I wasn't more helpful. I'd start by cutting into the key ring hole. The chip is usually on the sides of the metal key itself. On the older keys it was very easy to see where the chip was, I have no idea where they are in that style of key. Good luck with it and let us know how it goes cause I'm sure their are others that would like to do what you are doing.

Do you have 2 keys? If you do you can program it yourself, having siad that I would buy another blank key and cut into that to get the chip out. That way if you destroy it then your only out a few bucks and you still have a working key. If you destroy your working key then you may be SOL, especially if you only have one.

I know you bought the flip key already but there are others for sale on ebay that cost more, but come with everything you need, just cut the key and program it, I have one of these and its much easier than trying to replace the transponder chip.

I didn't even think to look for this when I was researching the flipkey option. I just found a Flipkey with transponder included on eBay and ordered it. This will make the process a LOT easier. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would still REALLY like to know where exactly the transponder is located in the sealed key head. While you've convinced me to take the simpler route, this question is going to gnaw on my brain until it's solved.

while im thinking of it, here is the key i purchased, like i said a bit more expensive and it ships from asia so it takes about 2 weeks to receive it, but it works great, the only downside ive had so far is the battery wore out in about 6 months.

Was it a key like this, or this one? It says not compatible with 2012 Focus SEL?

I bought the flip key for my 04, the 2012 has a different chip and my 2012 has a different style key blade as well, as far as I know there is nothing for the 2012 focus yet, but I'm sure there will be eventually.
